PALM BEACH, Florida (March 3, 2019) – The Stonehill College baseball team, who is ranked No. 8 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II East Region Poll, defeated Concordia (N.Y.) College twice to take its first doubleheader of the season, Sunday afternoon at the Santaluces Complex.
Game 1: Stonehill 4 – Concordia 1
Senior Michael Young threw his first complete game and earned his second win of the season tossing 7.0 innings, while striking out eight batters and giving up five hits.
Neither team was able to get a run across in the first or second inning, but Concordia put one up on the board in the top of the third inning as Kendall Luquis scored on an error by Young after reaching base on his own double to left field for a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Stonehill put runners on second and third with one out and Rob Duarte grounded out to bring home Aidan Wilde for a tie ball game, 1-1. The Skyhawks then saw Jeremiah Vargas single to shortstop to take their first lead of the game with Patrick Downey scoring from third for a one-run advantage, 2-1.
The Clippers were able to see one runner left on base in the top of the fifth, but Young retired the side giving Stonehill the advantage up at bat. With two outs, Wilde doubled to left field and John Orzechowski scored from second after getting on by a walk, 3-1.
Stonehill put one more run on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning before Young kept the Clippers from scoring with two outs and a runner on first base. Duarte led off the inning with a single and with one out, Matt Donlan doubled to left field easily scoring Duarte from second base, for a three-run lead, 4-1.
Game 2: Stonehill 6 – Concordia 5
The Clippers scored first in the second game of the doubleheader, this time driving in two runs off of three hits for a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. The Skyhawks responded with four runs over the next three innings, 4-2. Wilde launched his first-career homerun in the top of the second inning to cut the deficit to one, 2-1, as Concordia retired the side with three strikeouts.

Stonehill then added two runs to the score for their first lead in the top of the third, as PJ McDonald doubled to lead off and Thomas Quinn recorded a RBI with his own double. Matthew Rocco followed with a ground out to second base sending Quinn home adding to the lead, 3-2.
With bases loaded in the top of the fourth, McDonald sent a deep fly ball to center field for a sacrifice fly extending the lead to two, 4-2. Concordia cut the deficit to one again, 4-3, in the bottom of the frame on a line drive bringing home Luquis from second.
The Skyhawks scored one run in each of the next two innings from another Wilde and Quinn RBI, 6-3. In the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings, the Clippers chipped away totaling four of their 12 hits to combine for two runs, cutting the deficit to one, 6-5, as Eddie Magi came in for the final batter making him fly out to center field for the save, while Jared Brooks earned his second win of the season and seventh in his career.
The Skyhawks takes on Chestnut Hill College tomorrow, Monday March 4 with a first pitch scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
