Baseball Game Against Assumption Ends in 6-6 Draw

Sabo records two of the Skyhawks nine hits

WORCESTER, Mass. (May 1, 2018) – The Stonehill College baseball team concluded the three-game series with Assumption College in its first draw of the season with a score of 6-6 in 10 innings on Tuesday afternoon, as the game was called due to darkness, in Northeast-10 Conference divisional play.

For the Skyhawks, Harrison Sabo (Wilton, Connecticut/Wilton) went 2-for-5 with one run scored, one RBI, while Thomas Quinn (Wilbraham, Massachusetts/Wilbraham Monson) went 1-for-2 with one RBI as the game-tying RBI single. Six other Skyhawks registered a hit combining for nine hits in the draw.

Stonehill got the first runner on base in the top of the first inning as Sabo reached on an error. Assumption, however got the first run across in the bottom of the frame, as McQuade walked with one out. Jaenig singled to the shortstop and McQuade reached second and advanced to third on a throwing error, putting runners on first and third. Jake Byrne tallied the first RBI of the game hitting a hard grounder to shortstop to score McQuade, 1-0. The Greyhounds left runners on first and second as a ground out retired the inning.

The Skyhawks didn't see its first hits of the game until the top of the third with two outs. Matthew Rocco (Newington, Connecticut/Newington) doubled to right center, for his 12th double of the season, and Tyler Carey (Raynham, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham) sent the ball to a gap in right field for a triple, easily scoring Rocco tying the game, 1-1. Sabo then drove the ball through the left side putting Stonehill up one, 2-1, for its first lead of the game.

Assumption fought back in the bottom of the fourth with two hits and two runs to take back the lead, 3-2. The Greyhounds scored on two wild pitches with two outs, but the Skyhawks stopped them advancing around the bases with a line out to center field stranding one runner on third base.

Both teams picked up another run in the sixth inning as John Orzechowski (Monroe, Connecticut/Masuk) drove in Patrick Downey (Cheshire, Connecticut/Xavier) from second tying the game at three, 3-3. Assumption matched the tally in the bottom of the inning on a two-out bases loaded fielding error that put the Greyhounds back up one, 4-3. In the seventh and eighth innings, Assumption extended its lead to three, 6-3, with a run in each of the frames on a fielder's choice and a RBI single.


Duarte tallied two RBI for the Skyhawks

Sabo led off the top of the ninth as he was hit by a pitch. Alex Hurley (Rumford, Rhode Island/Worcester Academy) followed in his footsteps as he was also hit by a pitch, and William Kelleher (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) drew a walk loading the bases with no outs. Rob Duarte (Raynham, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham) ripped the ball through the five-six hole and brought home Sabo and Hurley, 6-5. After one out, Quinn singled to centerfield driving in the game-tying run as Kelleher crossed home, 6-6, and Stonehill loaded the bases with two outs but Assumption was able to halt the scoring with a strikeout stranding three Skyhawks on the bases.

The Greyhounds put pressure on the Skyhawks in the bottom of the ninth by putting runners on first and second, but two strikeouts ended the inning to extend the game to extra innings. Assumption retired Stonehill with a ground out and two strikeouts in the top of the 10th and took the momentum into the bottom of the frame. With a lead-off single, Assumption quickly loaded the bases on a back-to-back walks but on a fielder's choice, Stonehill threw the runner out advancing home to stop the Greyhounds from scoring. Jared Brooks (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) left the bases loaded with his lone strikeout of the game in the 0.2 innings pitched to close.

Stonehill (16-19-1, 9-13-1 NE10) hosts Merrimack College for the final series of the season from Thursday, May 3 to Saturday, May 5. The first game on Thursday will have a first pitch at 3:30 p.m. on Lou Gorman Field.
