Baseball Falls to Saint Anselm College, 5-3

Carey and Sabo were the only Skyhawks to record two hits each

MANCHESTER, N.H. (April 30, 2018) – The Stonehill College baseball team fell to Saint Anselm College on Monday afternoon at Sullivan Park in a 5-3 loss in Northeast-10 Conference divisional play.

For the Skyhawks, Tyler Carey (Raynham, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham) went 2-for-4 with one run scored, one RBI, and a double, while Harrison Sabo (Wilton, Connecticut/Wilton) batted 2-for-4. Matthew Rocco (Newington, Connecticut/Newington) and Alex Hurley (Rumford, Rhode Island/Worcester Academy) each chipped in a hit in the six-hit battle by Stonehill. Chris Murphy (Swampscott, Massachusetts/St. John's Prep) threw 3.2 innings allowing one hit and striking out four batters in the contest.

After a slight weather delay, Stonehill jumped on board right away in the top of the first, as Rocco reached on a throwing error and he sprinted around the bases to get to third. Carey reached first on a single up the middle, easily driving in Rocco from third with no outs, 2-0. After Carey drove in the first run of the game, he stole second and advanced on a throwing error. The Skyhawks stranded two runners, as three strikeouts retired the inning.

Saint Anselm was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the first inning and with one out, Oscar Larranaga doubled down the left field to cut the deficit to one, 2-1, as Max Wadington scored from second. The Hawks stranded one runner on base with a grounder and a pop up to the pitcher.

In each of the next two innings, Saint Anselm took its first lead of the game after tying up the game on a fielding error in the bottom of the second. The Hawks retired another three-straight Skyhawk batters and Saint Anselm saw two hits, one run across and two left on base as Dan Bodi  2-2. In the bottom of the fourth, Stonehill gave up a hit, a hit, and left two on base. Saint Anselm's defense gave up a double in the bottom of the third and with one out, Bodi singled to shortstop and Larranaga scored the first lead of the game, 3-2.

Rocco tallied one hit and one RBI in the top of the fifth and the Skyhawks retired three-straight batters in the bottom of the frame. Sabo notched his first hit of the season and in the top of the sixth inning. Sabo singled up the middle after one out, and Alex Hurley and William Kelleher (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield).

Saint Anselm recorded two more hits in the bottom of the seventh and with one out and a runner on second the Hawks were able to put two runs on the board back-to-back. Matthew Butigian and Larranaga singled and doubled, respectively, for a 5-3 game.

Sabo drilled a single up the middle of the field, and Hurley mimicked his hit in the top of the eighth, but the Skyhawks were restricted to two hits that frame. The game was called after they batted due to visibility on the field in the bottom of the eight.

Stonehill (16-19, 9-13 NE10) will travel to Worcester, Massachusetts tomorrow, Tuesday, May 1 for a single game, the final game of the series against the Greyhounds with a first pitch at 3:30 p.m.
