Assumption Walks Off With 6-5 Win Over Baseball in 11 Innings

Kelleher notched his 10th double of the season, one of three Skyhawk doubles in the game


Sabo was the only Skyhawk to tally two hits in the seven-hit game for Stonehill

WORCESTER, Mass. (April 12, 2018) – The Stonehill College baseball team fell in 11 innings to Assumption College Thursday afternoon after getting ahead 5-0 at Rocheleau Field in Worcester, Massachusetts in Northeast-10 Conference play.

For the Skyhawks, Tyler Carey (Raynham, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham) went 1-for-4 with a run scored, a RBI, a walk, a stolen base, and a sacrifice bunt.  William Kelleher (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) went 1-for-5 with an RBI double and two walks, while John Orzechowski (Monroe, Connecticut/Masuk) went 1-for-4 at the plate with a run scored, two stolen bases and a RBI. Harrison Sabo (Wilton, Connecticut/Wilton) tallied two hits, as Matthew Rocco (Newington, Connecticut/Newington) and Thomas Quinn (Wilbraham, Massachusetts/Wilbraham Monson) registered one hit a piece for combining for Stonehill's seven hits in the game.

After a defensive first inning, Stonehill saw Quinn triple to right field in the top of the second and Orzechowski easily scored the sophomore with his single to center field, 1-0. Orzechowski then stole second and advanced to third on the throw, but the Greyhounds ended the inning with a strikeout.

Stonehill saw another run in the top of the third inning, as Sabo singled to left center with one out and after a second out Sabo stole second to get in scoring position for Kelleher's 10th double of the season, putting the Skyhawks up 2-0.

Michael White (Stamford, Connecticut/Stamford/Canterbury School) retired Assumption in the bottom of the third, and Stonehill continued driving in runs in the top of the fourth. With two its and two errors, the Skyhawks rallied with two outs, getting Orzechowski on base and seeing him move over to third on a double by Rocco. Carey drove in the run, 3-0, and on a throwing error, Rocco scored to put the Skyhawks up four, 4-0. Carey advanced to third on the error and stole home for the fifth run of the game, 5-0.

The Skyhawks kept the Greyhounds off the board for six-straight innings, but five runs off four hits changed the game as Assumption tied the game 5-5. All five runs were scored with two outs and three walks and one hit by pitch were included in the inning. Joe Klingensmith (Topsfield, Massachusetts/Masconomet) closed out the inning with a strikeout, stranding three runners on base.

From the seventh to the 11th inning, Stonehill did not see a hit get through the defense, while Assumption saw four total hits out of their 14 from the game. In the bottom of the 11th, the Greyhounds led off the frame with a single through the left side and runners advanced to first and second with a throwing error. Still with no outs, Assumption got runners on each of the bases with a  bunt single from Trevor McQuade and Hunter Tralli found a hole through the right side for the game-winning single, 6-5.

Stonehill (11-13, 4-7 NE10) travels to Southern New Hampshire University to battle the Penmen tomorrow, Friday, April 13 for a 3:30 p.m. first pitch at SNHU Baseball Field in Manchester, New Hampshire and will take on the Penmen for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 14 at noon and 3:00 p.m.
