Bentley Strikes Early, Holds On For 7-3 Win Over Baseball

WALTHAM, Mass. (April 11, 2018) – The Stonehill College baseball team fell early to Bentley University, 7-3, in Northeast-10 Conference divisional play on Thursday afternoon at DeFelice Field.

For the Skyhawks, John Orzechowski (Monroe, Connecticut/Masuk) went 3-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI, while Tyler Carey (Raynham, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham) batted 2-for-4. Harrison Sabo (Wilton, Connecticut/Wilton) tallied the other two RBI for the Skyhawks as he batted 1-for-3 at the plate with two RBI, a double, a walk, and a stolen base.

The Falcons saw a run early in the game after a two out walk, led by Max Troiani stealing second and third and then scoring on a throwing error, 1-0. Eddie Magi (Fairfield, Connecticut/Fairfield Ludlowe) got out of the inning after a single to left field and a strikeout.  

Bentley added three more to the scoreboard in the bottom of the second as Luke Figueira doubled down the left field line to score Chris Hopkins from second, 2-0. With runners on second and third, Charlie Auditore connected for a single to left center, driving in Figueira from third and Samko from second, for a four-run advantage, 4-0.

Stonehill saw its first hits of the game in the top of the third inning, as Orzechowski led off with a single through the left side and Matthew Rocco (Newington, Connecticut/Newington) walked to get runners on first and second. Rob Duarte (Raynham, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham Regional) moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt and Sabo successful drove them in with his fifth double of the season cutting the deficit to two, 4-2.

With another two runs off three hits in the bottom of the sixth, Bentley opened up the game with a four-run lead, 6-2. Bentley scored on a wild pitch and a double to left center continuing the offensive momentum.

After keeping the Falcons from getting into scoring position in the bottom of the third, Mike Samko singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch and later reached third on another wild pitch. He was brought in by Brandon Grover, scoring before the third out was made for a five-run lead, 7-2.

With one last chance for the Skyhawks and two outs, Downey singled through the left side and Carey loaded the bases with his own single through the five-six hole. Orzechowski connected for a hard ground ball to third base, that brought in William Kelleher (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) from third to score one final run for Stonehill, 7-3.

Stonehill (11-12, 4-6 NE10) travels to Worcester, Massachusetts for a single game against Assumption College tomorrow, Thursday, April 12 with a first pitch slated for 3:30 p.m.
