Baseball Suffers Doubleheader Sweep at Adelphi

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (April 8, 2018) –  The Stonehill College baseball team was swept by Adelphi University with scores on 4-1 and 5-1 in the twin bill on Sunday at William Bonomo Field in Northeast-10 Conference cross divisional play.

GAME 1: Stonehill 1 – Adelphi 4

The Panthers jumped on board in the bottom of the first inning with one run as Brett Malm stole second and Tyler Becker scored from third after he advanced to third on Malm's single through the right side, 1-0.

Stonehill responded in the top of the third inning with a run of their own to tie the game, 1-1. John Orzechowski (Monroe, Connecticut/Masuk) led off with a walk and Matthew Rocco (Newington, Connecticut/Newington) singled through the right side to get runners on first and second for Tyler Carey (Raynham, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham). Carey singled on a bunt and loaded the bases, as Harrison Sabo (Wilton, Connecticut/Wilton) flew out to right field for a sacrifice fly.

After the Skyhawks stranded two runners in the top of the fourth, the Panthers were able to get on top again with two runs off three hits, including a double and two singles. Jack Ryan and Steve Withers tallied the RBI for Adelphi, extending the lead to two, 3-1.

The Skyhawks put pressure on the Panthers in back-to-back innings, as Stonehill left two on base in the top of the fifth and two on base in the top of the sixth. Brandon Morse was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the sixth in the leadoff spot and was moved around the bases to get in scoring position for Withers, who drove in another run for Adelphi putting the Panthers up, 4-1.

Adelphi stranded four and tallied one hit in the remaining three innings, while Stonehill left three runners on in the top of the ninth and was unable to get past the Panther's pitching who combined for 12 strikeouts.

GAME 2: Stonehill 1 – Adelphi 5

Kelleher scored the lone run of the second game

The Skyhawks got a tally early in the game, as William Kelleher (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) reached on an error and stole second to get in scoring position for Shane O'Halloran (Burlington, Massachusetts/Burlington) to register his first-career double to bring in Kelleher, 1-0.

Patrick Hurley (Roslindale, Massachusetts/Catholic Memorial) halted the Panthers for the first two innings, pitching to only three batters, but Adelphi notched totaled three hits for two runs in the bottom of the third for the lead, 2-1. Two doubles and a triple in the third gave Adelphi their first lead of the game.

After a leadoff walk and an out, Adelphi had runners on first and third for Brandon Warick to single through the five-six hole, bringing in Thomas Colombo from third, 3-1. Hurley got the final two batters to fly out, stranding two runners on base in the bottom of the fourth.

Stonehill tried to get some runs across in the sixth, but the Skyhawks were stopped after seeing Alex Hurley (Rumford, Rhode Island/Worcester Academy) single and Kelleher follow with a single of his own. Adelphi fought back and extended its lead with a run in the bottom of the frame, 4-1, as Kory Cassara singled up the middle and Warick tried reaching third but was thrown out after Lucas Terwilliger scored.

Adelphi saw one more run across in the bottom of the eighth after a pitching change by the Skyhawks. With bases loaded and two outs, Terwilliger scored on a wild pitch to give the Panthers another run, 5-1.

Stonehill (11-11, 4-5 NE10) travels to Bentley University on Wednesday, April 11 for the second game of the divisional series with a first pitch at 3:30 p.m. at DeFelice Field.
