Baseball Tripped Up By Adelphi’s Offense, 9-1

Rocco crosses the plate for the only run for the Skyhawks


Sabo notched his fourth double of the season and ninth of the career

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (April 7, 2018) – The Stonehill College baseball team was unable to get the bats rolling in a 9-1 Northeast-10 Conference cross-divisional loss on Saturday, April 7 on William J. Bonomo Field.  

For the Skyhawks, Matthew Rocco (Newington, Connecticut/Newington) recorded the lone run, while batting 1-for-4, as Harrison Sabo (Wilton, Connecticut/Wilton) also went 1-for-4 at the plate with a RBI double. Alex Hurley (Rumford, Rhode Island/Worcester Academy) was the only other Skyhawk to record a hit in the loss, as William Kelleher (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) tallied the only walk.

Adelphi scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first with one out and bases loaded as Brandon Morse reached on a fielder's choice and Tyler Becker crossed home for a 1-0 lead. The Panthers' Ed Baram held the Skyhawks for six-straight innings with no hits and no runners left on base, as Adelphi continued to extend its lead.

In the bottom of the third inning, Adelphi picked up two more runs from two hits, including a run as Morse struck out swinging and was out at first, but Brett Malm snuck in another run on the second out of the inning. With another run in the bottom of the fourth, the Panthers extended its lead to four, 4-0.

A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth added a run to the scoreboard, 5-0, for the Panthers. Stonehill responded to Adelphi's offensive attack in the top of the seventh, as Rocco singled down the left field line and Sabo recorded his fourth double of the season to cut the deficit to four, 5-1. Connor Williams (Glastonbury, Connecticut/East Catholic) notched the third inning for the Skyhawks holding the Panthers to no hits getting Adelphi to fly out twice and strikeout.  

Adelphi sealed the game with four more runs in the bottom of the eighth as Tyler Warshefskie scored on a passed ball and Malm launched a three-run homerun to left field with two outs, putting the Panthers up by eight, 9-1.

Stonehill (11-9, 4-3 NE10) faces Adelphi University once again for a doubleheader tomorrow, Sunday, April 8 on William J. Bonomo Field with a first pitch at noon.
