Brooks earned his third win of the season

BROOKLINE, Mass. (March 28, 2018) – The Stonehill College baseball team defeated Bentley University, 2-1, against Northeast-10 Conference foe Bentley University on Wednesday afternoon at Friedman Diamond on the campus of Northeastern University.

For Stonehill, junior William Kelleher (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI, six other Skyhawks tallied one hit each, including Matthew Rocco (Newington, Connecticut/Newington), Tyler Carey (Raynham, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham), Harrison Sabo (Wilton, Connecticut/Wilton), Alex Hurley (Rumford, R.I./Worcester Academy), Patrick Downey (Cheshire, Connecticut), John Orzechowski (Monroe, Connecticut/Masuk). Freshman pitcher Jared Brooks (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) threw for 5.2 innings and recorded his third win of his career, while Joe Klingensmith (Topsfield, Massachusetts/Masconomet) tallied his fifth save on the mound.

The Falcons started the game with one hit and one left on base, as Brooks threw to four batters in the top of the fourth. The Skyhawks in response scored one run in the bottom of the frame. With one out, Carey singled to the shortstop and Sabo was hit by a pitch to get runners on first and second. Stonehill had two outs and Kelleher drove the ball out to center field to score the first run of the game, 1-0. After a walk to load the bases, Bentley's Jensen struck out the last batter to retire the side.

Klingensmith recorded his fifth save of the season

Bentley's bats stayed alive in the top of the second, as Chris Hopkins and Luke Figueira singled, but the Falcons were unable to get the runners in with Brooks striking out two and getting Pierce to flew out to center field.

Stonehill picked up its second run of the game, 2-0, as Hurley singled with one out and Kelleher sent the ball down the left field line for a RBI double. Downey followed with a single to left center but the Falcons halted the offensive attack stranding two on base.

The Falcons cut the deficit to one, 2-1, in the top of the fifth as Jake Pierce advanced on a failed pick off attempt and easily scored off Mike Samko's hard ground ball to first base.

Bentley continued to put pressure on Stonehill, as they totaled three hits in each of the final innings, but the Skyhawks defense and pitching staff was able to hold off the offense for their second conference win of the season.

Stonehill (9-7, 2-1 NE10) will take on Saint Michael's College tomorrow, Thursday, March 29 for a doubleheader at the New England Baseball Complex in Northboro, Massachusetts with a first pitch at 10:00 a.m.
