Baseball Takes Final Game in Florida Against Caldwell, 4-3

Carey records game-winning double

Brooks threw for 8.0 innings giving up one hit and striking out seven

PALM BEACH, FLORIDA. (March 11, 2018) – The Stonehill College baseball team battled until the end against Caldwell University, as Tyler Carey's (Raynham, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham) double lifted the Skyhawls over the Cougars, 4-3, in the bottom of the ninth inning at the Santaluces Complex in Palm Beach, Florida.

For the Skyhawks, Carey was the only one to record three hits, as he drove in two runs including the game winner. Isiah Nunez (Brooklyn, New York/Berkshire School) was the other Skyhawk to bring in a run, while Matthew Rocco (Newington, Connecticut/Newington) stole home after Carey stole second early in the game. Rocco and John Orzechowski (Monroe, Connecticut/Masuk) each tallied two hits, batting .500 on the day. On the mound, Jared Brooks (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) pitched 8.0 innings, allowed one hit and two runs as he struck out seven and Joe Klingensmith (Topsfield, Massachusetts/Masconomet) earned his first win of the season and third career win.

Brooks shut down the Cougars in the top of the first, as Stonehill backed him up with a run in the bottom of the frame for a 1-0 lead. With one out Orzechowski tallied his third double of the season and stole third for his 19th career stolen base, as Carey singled to right field bringing home the sophomore.

Caldwell responded quickly in the top of the second, as Jack Zosulis walked in the leadoff spot and he advanced to third with one out on an error by the pitcher. Kevin Goldman grounded out to short stop, easily scoring Zosulis to tie the game at one, 1-1.

Stonehill continued fighting and Rocco led off with a single to left field, while Orzechowski moved him over with a sacrifice bunt. Carey continued moving Rocco over to third with a single to right field and the two set up a double steal putting the Skyhawks back on top, 2-1. The Cougars ended the inning leaving two runners on base.

Rocco went 2-for-4 with two runs scored with a double and a stolen base

Neither team saw much action in the fourth or fifth innings, but Caldwell jumped at the opportunity in the top of the sixth to tie the game up for the second time. Quintin Quartararo walked and was moved over to second with a ground out. Rob DeSanti tallied an RBI with his single to left field, 2-2, and Brooks was able to halt the attack with a strikeout and a fly out.

In the bottom of the eighth and top of the ninth, both teams again scored a run knotting the game the third time, 3-3.

With two pitching changes in the bottom of the ninth for the Cougars, Stonehill was able to tally two hits, including a lead off double from Rocco. The junior advanced to third on an error by the catcher and he was held up as Orzechowski grounded out to the pitcher. Carey came up to the plate with one out and cranked a double to left field to give the Skyhawks their fourth lead of the game with Rocco's second run of the game, 4-3.

Stonehill (7-6) takes a week off before hosting Merrimack College on Sunday March 18 for two seven-inning games at Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood, Massachusetts.
