Baseball Falls to Bloomfield, 10-8

Sabo knocks in a career-high four runs

BOCA RATON, FLORIDA. (March 8, 2018) – The Stonehill College baseball team dropped a non-conference game to Bloomfield College, 10-8, at Lynn Baseball Field.

Four Skyhawks tallied RBI in the loss, including Harrison Sabo (Wilton, Connecticut/Wilton) who registered a career-high four RBI, as he went 2-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored, a double, a triple, and a stolen base. Alex Hurley (Rumford, Rhode Island/Worcester Academy) registered a RBI, while swinging 1-for-5 with a run scored, as Patrick Downey (Cheshire, Connecticut/Xavier) and Isiah Nunez (Brooklyn, New York/Berkshire School) also knocked in a run.

Stonehill held the first lead of the game in the top of the first after Matthew Rocco (Newington, Connecticut/Newington) and Tyler Carey (Raynham, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham) got on base and Sabo drove them home with his second double of the season, 2-0. Hurley followed with his own single to left field, easily scoring Sabo from third for a three-run lead, 3-0.  

Bloomfield answered right away scoring one run off of two hits, as Harry Montero brought in Juan Reina from second after he doubled to left field, cutting the deficit to two, 3-1. The Bears persisted with one run in the bottom of the second and two in the third. With the bases loaded, Jason Holguin reached on a fielder's choice which scored Isaac Pichardo in the second, as Montero and Jhoan Rodriguez homered to right, giving Bloomfield its first lead of the game, 4-3.

After a pitching change for the Skyhawks, five more runs came across home plate in the bottom of the fifth inning for the Bears. Montero lifted his second homerun over the fence, while Reina and Albert Munoz recorded the other two hits, and Reina, Rodriguez, Pichardo, and Munoz scored, 9-3.

The Skyhawks were able to string together some hits and fielding errors in the top of the sixth, as they cut the deficit to five, 9-4, with a run scored by Thomas Quinn (Wilbraham, Massachusetts/Wilbraham Monson) on a strike three passed ball. The Bears matched Stonehill's one run with its own from Anthony's Lantigua's sacrifice fly bringing in Reina from third, 10-4.

Stonehill continued fighting in the top of the eighth with four runs to cut the deficit to two, 10-8. Rocco led off the inning with a walk and advanced on a passed ball, as Carey also walked. Sabo found a gap and tripled to center field scoring the two on base. Hurley recorded the third walk of the inning, while William Kelleher (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) also walked, putting runners on each base for Downey, who grounded out to the pitcher but Sabo scored, Nunez also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to left field, deep enough for Hurley to tag from third, cutting the deficit to two, 10-8.

Stonehill (6-4) continues battling in Florida with a contest against Molloy College at Barry University tomorrow, Friday, March 9 with a first pitch at 1:00 p.m.
