Baseball Stands Up To Bloomfield With 7-6 Win

Brooks earns his second victory of the season


Kelleher tallied his eighth-straight game with at least one hit

BOCA RATON, FLORIDA. (March 6, 2018) – The Stonehill College baseball team held on against Bloomfield College for a 7-6 victory Tuesday afternoon at Lynn Baseball Field in Boca Raton, Florida.

For Stonehill (5-3), William Kelleher (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) went 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI, while Matthew Rocco (Newington, Connecticut/Newington) tallied two RBI and Patrick Downey (Cheshire, Connecticut/Xavier) recorded one himself. Rocco, Harrison Sabo (Wilton, Connecticut/Wilton), and Jeremiah Vargas (Waterbury, Connecticut/Kennedy High/Taft School) each totaled two hits each, as the Skyhawks out hit the Bears 11 to 10. Freshman Jared Brooks (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) threw 7.1 innings, gave up eight hits and only four runs for his second win of the season, as senior Joe Klingensmith (Topsfield, Massachusetts/Masconomet) closed the game in the top of the ninth, striking out two and holding the Skyhawks 7-6 score for his fourth save of the season.

After two scoreless innings between the two teams, Bloomfield's Anthony Elefante led off the top of the third with a double to left field and later advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a single from Azmir Garcia with no outs, 1-0. With one out, the Bears had runners on first and third and Christopher Cabral and Garcia stole their next respective base for a failed pickoff attempt by the Skyhawks for a 2-0 lead in favor of Bloomfield. The Bears' later had one on, and Harry Montero connected for a double to right center, which scored Cabral on a two out hit and a three-run lead, 3-0.


Klingensmith registered his fourth save of the season

Stonehill totaled four hits in the first three innings, and matched it in the bottom of the fourth, to take a one-run lead, 4-3. With no outs, Alex Hurley (Rumford, Rhode Island/Worcester Academy) and Kelleher crossed home, cutting the deficit to two, 4-2, off of a double from Kelleher and a single from Downey, respectively. The Skyhawks put runners on each base with two outs and Rocco connected for his 14th hit of the last seven games to take a 4-3 lead.

The Skyhawks were able to see another multiple-run inning with three tallies in the bottom of the seventh. Three runners were on base while the Bears saw a wild pitch thrown and Rocco scored with no outs. Kelleher launched his sixth double of the season and second of the game to score Hurley and Sabo extending the lead to four, 7-3.

Bloomfield did not go down without a fight, as the Bears scored one run off of two hits in the top of the eighth and two runs in the top of the ninth off of two more hits, 7-6, but Klingensmith was able to hold onto the lead for the Skyhawks and pick up his fourth save of the season.

Stonehill will face Felician College tomorrow, Wednesday March 7 at 10:00 a.m. at Lynn Baseball Field on the campus of Lynn University.
