Queens Slips Past Baseball, 8-7, in 10 innings

Kelleher combines for a career-high four RBI

Hurley went 2-for-5 with his fifth-double of the season, 16th career

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (February 25, 2018) – The Stonehill College baseball team wrapped up their South Carolina trip with a 10-inning battle against Queens (N.Y.) College, where the Knights came up on top 8-7 on Polo Grounds on Sunday morning.

For Stonehill (4-1), William Kelleher (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) went 2-for-5 with a double, his fourth of the season, and four RBI, a career-high, while Alex Hurley (Rumford, Rhode Island/Worcester Academy) also went 2-for-5 with a double and one RBI. John Orzechowski (Monroe, Connecticut/Masuk) also tallied two RBI, as Matthew Rocco (Newington, Connecticut/Newington) registered his fifth-straight game with a hit.

Queens got on board right away with three runs in the top of the first. Anthony Scotti hit a solo homerun to left field, while Andrew Navarez and Ron Linsalato also collected an RBI each in the first frame for a 3-0 lead.

Orzechowski tallied his first RBI in the bottom of the second, to cut the deficit to two, 3-1, as he walked to bring in Patrick Downey (Cheshire, Connecticut/Xavier). The Skyhawks ended the inning with the bases loaded registering one run and two hits.

The Knights continued powering past the Skyhawks with two more runs in the fourth inning. Eloy Benson led off with a double to center field and Queens moved the runners over to scoring position, as Benson jotted home from a ground ball to third and Eric Roubal scored on an error.

Rocco went on a five-game hit streak while in South Carolina

Stonehill was able to get back on its feet in the bottom of the fifth with Rocco's lead off double and moving over to third from a single to left field. Hurley connected for another single to bring Rocco home and two more came in from Kelleher's double to left field, cutting the deficit to one, 5-4.

The Knights responded with another run the top of the sixth, 6-4, but Stonehill kept putting up a fight, as Kelleher drove in another two runs from a single in the bottom of the seventh, 6-6.

Queens was the only team to tally hits in the eighth in ninth inning, but no one crossed home sending the game in extra innings. Queens had its third-multi run inning of the game in the top of the frame with two hits driving in two runs. With last at bats, Stonehill had one more chance to tie it or take the win, but with two runners on and one out, Orzechowski was only able to drive in one run with a sacrifice fly to center field, 8-7.

In the hitter's battle, Queens out hit Stonehill 16 to 12, as the Skyhawks had one error and the Knights had two.

Stonehill takes a break before heading to Boca Raton, Florida to take on a 10-game schedule from Sunday, March 4 to Sunday, March 11 kicking it off with a doubleheader against Wilmington (Del.) University at Lynn University at noon and 3:00 p.m.
