Baseball Tops Bridgeport, 5-2, for Fourth-Straight Win

Magi registers his first-career save

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (February 24, 2018) – The Stonehill College baseball team defeated the University of Bridgeport, 5-2, on Saturday night, for its fourth-straight win of the season at the Polo Grounds in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

For Stonehill (4-0), Harrison Sabo (Wilton, Connecticut/Wilton) led the offense, batting 2-for-4 with a two-run homerun, one run scored, and three RBI. John Orzechowski (Monroe, Connecticut/Masuk) and Alex Hurley (Rumford, Rhode Island/Worcester Academy) also went 2-for-4, while Thomas Quinn (Wilbraham, Massachusetts/Wilbraham Monson) tallied one RBI batting 1-for-3. Freshman pitcher Jared Brooks (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) recorded his first-career win on the mound, throwing 6.1 innings, allowing three hits and striking out four, as Chris Murphy (Swampscott, Massachusetts/St. John's Prep) and Eddie Magi (Fairfield, Connecticut/Fairfield Ludlowe) wrapped up the game, giving up one hit each giving Magi his first-career save.

The Skyhawks were able to get one runner on base in seven of the eight innings, producing five runs off of nine hits. Orzechowski opened up the bottom of the first with a leadoff single to left field and stole second for his third stolen base of the season. Sabo drove him in with his own single to left field giving Stonehill a 1-0 lead.

Brooks shut down Bridgeport in the first four innings allowing no hits, as Stonehill was able to extend its lead, 2-0 in the bottom of the second. Quinn singled with two outs and Kelleher scored from second after getting on base with his own single in the lead off spot.

The Knights cut the deficit to one, 2-1 in the top of the third, but Stonehill was quick to answer with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Tyler Carey (Raynham, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham) led the inning off with a walk and Sabo answered with his third-career homerun to right field. With no outs. Hurley doubled to right center, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and then scored on a second wild pitch, extending their lead to four, 5-1.

At the top of the seventh, Bridgeport brought home Ben Torres, as Aiden Burton tripled to right center for their final run of the game, 5-2.

Stonehill wraps up their South Carolina trip with a 9:00 a.m. first pitch against Queens (N.Y.) College.
