Baseball Lets One Slip Away at Saint Michael’s, 5-1

COLCHESTER, Vt. (April 29, 2017) – The Stonehill College baseball team allowed five runs among four innings, of the nine-inning game in Northeast-10 Conference play against Saint Michael's College on Saturday morning.

For the Skyhawks, Ben Monte (New Haven, Connecticut/Guilford), Eddie Bowler (Hingham, Massachusetts/Hingham), Patrick Downey (Cheshire, Connecticut/Xavier), Steve Lee (Braintree, Massachusetts/Braintree), and Alexander Joyce (Newton, Massachusetts/Newton North) each contributed one hit, while Jeremiah Vargas (Waterbury, Connecticut/Kennedy High/Taft School) added to the total with two hits of his own.

Stonehill recorded the first two hits of the game, as Monte singled to left with one out and Bowler followed with a single through the right side, advancing Monte to third. But, the Purple Knights got out of the inning turning a double play.

The Skyhawks got on board first, as Joyce doubled to center field and Vargas singled to right field, advancing Joyce to third for John Orzechowski (Monroe, Connecticut/Masuk). Orzechowski grounded out to the pitcher and Joyce got home for the first run of the game, 1-0. Saint Michael's got out of the inning with a pop out and a fly out, as the Skyhawks left one runner on base. 

Saint Michael's tied up the game with two outs in the bottom of the third, as Trevor Allen singled to first base and advanced to second on a throwing error, bringing home Drew Salk from third.

The Hawks extended its lead to two, 3-1, as Salk singled to center field bringing home Connor Hopkins. With two outs, Sean Winthrop roped a double to center field, easily scoring Trevor Allen from first for the second run of the inning, giving the Hawk's its first lead of the game.

In the bottom of the seventh, Salk led off with a double to center field and advanced to third on a wild pitch and with one out, he scored on a wild pitch, putting up the Hawks 4-1. Brandon Jewer (Billerica, Massachusetts/Billerica Memorial) was able to get out of the inning with a strikeout and a pop out, leaving on runner on first.

Stonehill put pressure on the Hawks in the top of the eighth as Vargas was hit by a pitch and Monte reached on a fielding error with one out, but Saint Michael's left runners on first and third with back-to-back fly outs.

Kyle Cone led off the bottom of the frame with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, getting a runner in scoring position for the Hawks. Cone was safe at third on a wild pitch and with one out, as Connor Hopkins walked, putting runners on first and third. Joe Robertson got down a sacrifice bunt, recording the second out of the game, but he got Cone to score home, getting the Hawks up four runs, 5-1.

Baseball (13-25, 7-12 NE10) faces Saint Michael's College in two games against the Purple Knights tomorrow, Sunday, April 30 with a first pitch slated for noon.
