Baseball Gets Past Saint Anselm With an 8-1 Victory

Bowler went 3-for-4 with four RBI and one run scored

EASTON, Mass. (April 24, 2017) – The Stonehill College baseball team took game two of the three-game series against Saint Anselm College, 8-1, Monday afternoon on Lou Gorman Field

For the Skyhawks, Ben Monte (New Haven, Connecticut/Guilford) batted 2-for-4 with three runs scored and one RBI with a double and a triple, as Eddie Bowler (Hingham, Massachusetts/Hingham) went 3-for-4 with four RBI, one run scored and two doubles. Steve Lee (Braintree, Massachusetts/Braintree) also had a day at the plate, batting 2-for-2 with two doubles and a sac bunt. Jeremy Roberts (Reading, Massachusetts/Malden Catholic) pitched seven complete innings, giving up one run, six hits, and striking out six.

Saint Anselm tallied its first hit in the top of the first with two outs as Bragole singled to center field and advanced to second on a fielding error. Roberts was able to get out of the inning with a pop up to second base leaving Bragole on second.

Stonehill jumped on top in the bottom of the frame with a double from Monte down the left field line with one out. Bowler mimicked Monte with a double himself to left field, easily putting the Skyhawks up 1-0. Bowler advanced on a wild pitch and Joe Klingensmith (Topsfield, Massachusetts/Masconomet) walked to get runners on first and third, but the Hawks got out of the jam.

The Skyhawks scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth with four hits, as Patrick Downey (Cheshire, Connecticut/Xavier) singled up the middle and advanced on a sac bunt by Lee. With two outs, Downey stole third and Matthew Rocco (Newington, Connecticut/Newington) walked. Downey then advanced home on a throwing error by second base as Rocco tried getting into a rundown. John Orzechowski (Monroe, Connecticut/Masuk) followed with a single up the middle advancing Rocco to third. With a double steal, Rocco scored for the and Monte followed launching the ball over the centerfielder's head putting him on third. Bowler tallied his second hit of the game singling to center field driving Monte in.

The Hawks got one run back in top of the fifth, as McQuarrie beat out the throw from shortstop and made his way around the bases after a sacrifice fly to left field from McKeon cutting the deficit to four, 5-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Hawks got one out, but Rocco walked, and Orzechowski reached on a fieledr's choice, while later advancing on a passed ball. Monte put runners on first and second with a walk, as Bowler doubled to right center scoring the two on base. Harrison Sabo (Wilton, Connecticut/Wilton) followed Bowler with his own double to center field, driving in Bowler from second, putting the Skyhawks up 8-1. Michael White (Stamford, Connecticut/Stamford/Canterbury School) and Pat Shore (Norwood, Massachusetts/Catholic Memorial) retired the Hawks in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively. Both walked one batter and gave up no hits, as Shore struck out two to end the bottom of the ninth.

Baseball (12-24, 6-11 NE10) is scheduled to host Assumption College on Wednesday, April 26 with a first pitch slated for 3:30 p.m. on Lou Gorman Field.
