Baseball Outhits Saint Anselm in 5-1 Victory

Roberts earns first win of the season

EASTON, Mass. (April 19, 2017) – The Stonehill College baseball team defeated Saint Anselm College in Northeast-10 Conference play on Wednesday afternoon on Lou Gorman Field with a 5-1 score.

For the Skyhawks, John Orzechowski (Monroe, Connecticut/Masuk) went 2-for-4 with one run scored, one RBI and a stolen base, while Joe Klingensmith (Topsfield, Massachusetts/Masconomet) batted 2-for-4 with one RBI. Steve Lee (Braintree, Massachusetts/Braintree) also contributed to the win hitting 1-for-2 with two runs scored, one RBI and his fourth homerun of the season. Jeremy Roberts (Reading, Massachusetts/Malden Catholic) threw his first complete game and picked up his first win of the season striking out six and allowing six hits.

Orzechowski batted 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI

Stonehill was able to get one run across in the bottom of the second, as Lee walked with one out and Justin Nicklas (Foxboro, Massachusetts/St. Sebastian's) singled through the left side putting Lee in scoring position. Nicklas stole second in a first-and-third situation, while Lee took home after the Hawks' Adam Kroi tallied his fourth strikeout for the second out of the inning. Kroi closed out the inning with a fly out to right field.

Saint Anselm left two runners on base in the top of the fifth with a single from Dan Bodi, who advanced to second on an error by the right fielder. Roberts retired back-to-back batters with fly outs, but Matthew Flynn got on base reaching on an error by third and Jason Turner grounded out to third for the final out of the inning.

The Skyhawks had a three-run inning in the bottom of the frame, as Alex Hurley (Rumford, Rhode Island/Worcester Academy) singled up the middle and Jeremiah Vargas (Waterbury, Connecticut/Kennedy High/Taft School) advanced him to third on a sacrifice bunt. Orzechowski drove the ball to left field bringing in Hurley from second. Eddie Bowler (Hingham, Massachusetts/Hingham) doubled to center field with two outs bringing Vargas around the bases from second. Harrison Sabo (Wilton, Connecticut/Wilton) and Klingensmith connected for back-to-back singles, advancing Bowler all the way home for a four-run lead, 4-0.

In the top of the eighth, the Hawks rallied with two outs, as John Marculitis singled to right field scoring Flynn from second after he singled up the middle, cutting the deficit to three, 4-1.

Stonehill kept tallying hits, as Lee launched a long ball with two outs to gain the four-run lead back, 5-1.

Saint Anselm battled in the top of the top of the ninth, but they ended up leaving one runner on as Roberts struck out Tyler McKeon for the final out of the game

Stonehill (10-22, 4-9 NE10) travels to Manchester, New Hampshire to face Southern New Hampshire University in its third game of the three-game series on Friday, April 21 with a first pitch slated for 5:00 p.m., where the teams are tied 1-1.
