Baseball Holds On To Lead Throughout 8-5 Victory Over Southern New Hampshire

Paul pitched four scoreless innings, throwing 5.1 total

EASTON, Mass. (April 17, 2017) – The Stonehill College baseball team earned an 8-5 non-conference victory over Southern New Hampshire University on Monday afternoon on Lou Gorman Field.

Bowler hit 3-for-5 with one RBI and one run scored

For the Skyhawks, Ben Monte (New Haven, Connecticut/Guilford) ripped his sixth homerun of the season, while also batting 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. Patrick Downey (Cheshire, Connecticut/Xavier) also went 2-for-5 with two RBI, as Eddie Bowler (Hingham, Massachusetts/Hingham) and Steve Lee (Braintree, Massachusetts/Braintree) each tallied one RBI each. Freshman Daniel Paul (Farmington, Connecticut/Avon Old Farms) earned his first-career win on the mound striking out four and giving up only three hits.

The Skyhawks scored one run in the first inning off a sacrifice fly to left field as John Orzechowski (Monroe, Connecticut/Masuk) scored from third after initially reaching by an error on the third basemen, putting the Skyhawks up 1-0, its first time to have a lead in two games.

Daniel Paul (Farmington, Connecticut/Avon Old Farms) got out of back-to-back bases loaded jams in the bottom of the first, with a grounder to third base and then a strike out, holding the Penmen to no runs.

Stonehill added three runs to the scoreboard in the top of the third, as Bowler singled to left field with one out and advanced to second on a hard drive to center field by Harrison Sabo (Wilton, Connecticut/Wilton). Bases became loaded as Justin Nicklas (Foxboro, Massachusetts/St. Sebastian's) walked and Lee drove in the second run of the game from a single to right field. Downey followed that with his own single, scoring Sabo from third and Nicklas from second, expanding its lead to three, 4-0.

Monte led off the top of the fourth with a double to left center, scoring easily from second off of Bowler's base hit to right field, adding a run to the board for the Skyhawks, 5-0.

Southern New Hampshire scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth, as Joshua Zbierski singled to center field for a leadoff hit and advanced on a wild pitch getting in scoring position for Sean Webster. With a single to right field by Webster, Zbierski scored.

The Skyhawks responded with two runs in the top of the sixth inning as Orzechowski reached on a hard ground ball to the shortstop as he was safe at first after hustling down the line. Monte followed the freshman with his sixth homerun of the season, and 10th in his career, sending the ball over the left field fence for a six-run lead, 7-1.

Three runs in the bottom of the sixth cut the deficit to three for the Penmen, 7-4. Southern New Hampshire scored its three runs off of one hit and one error, scoring Ryan Sullivan, John Stanton and Zbierski.

The Penmen picked up one more run in the bottom of the ninth, 7-5, as Stanton reached on a fielder's choice and Sullivan advanced to third on a throwing error and then to third putting him in scoring position. With one out, Zbierski tallied the RBI hitting a hard grounder to shortstop, sending Zbierski easily from third.

Stonehill took back the run that was lost in the bottom of the eighth, as Harrison Sabo (Wilton, Connecticut/Wilton) recorded his first homerun of his career for a leadoff hit in the top of the ninth, 8-5.

Junior Pat Shore (Norwood, Massachusetts/Catholic Memorial) earned the save for the Skyhawks, as he came in relief for one inning in the bottom of the ninth getting the Penmen to line out, ground out and fly out, retiring the side.

Baseball (9-21, 3-8 NE10) travels to Waltham, Massachusetts for a single game against Bentley University on Tuesday, April 18 with a first pitch slated for 3:30 p.m.
