Baseball Tripped Up By Assumption in 11-7 Loss

Bowler batted 3-for-5 with three RBI

WORCESTER, Mass. (April 11, 2017) – The Stonehill College baseball team scored late in the game to try and catch up to Assumption's early 11-1 lead Tuesday afternoon on Rocheleau Field.

For the Skyhawks, Eddie Bowler (Hingham, Massachusetts/Hingham) went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI, while Justin Nicklas (Foxboro, Massachusetts/St. Sebastian's) batted 2-for-5 with two RBI. Freshmen pitchers Eddie Magi (Fairfield, Massachusetts/Fairfield Ludlowe) and Daniel Paul (Farmington, Connecticut/Avon Old Farms) combined for seven innings pitched, only three runs given up, and 10 strikeouts.

Sabo went 3-for-3 with one RBI

Stonehill got off to a good start, as Tyler Carey (Raynham, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham) walked with only one out and Ben Monte (New Haven, Connecticut/Guilford) singled to right field. Bowler drove the ball to left field scoring Carey for the first run of the game, 1-0. Kyle Chudoba held the Skyhawks to two hits in the inning and left three on base as Nicklas flew out to right field for the final out.

Assumption jumped on board in the bottom of the first as Hunter Tralli sent a two-run blast to right center and Matt Schneider tripled to right field to score Trevor McQuade for a 3-1 lead.

The Greyhounds continued putting runs on the board in the bottom of the second as five hits scored five runs. Assumption tallied three more runs in the bottom of the third, but Magi retired the side with a strike out and a ground out, leaving the Greyhounds with a 11-1 advantage.

Stonehill rallied in the top of the fifth, cutting the deficit to six, 11-5. With one out, Bowler connected on a pitch and drove the ball to left field scoring two runs. Joe Klingensmith (Topsfield, Massachusetts/Masconomet) reached first as he was hit by a pitch and Harrison Sabo (Wilton, Connecticut/Wilton) followed up with a single to right field scoring Bowler from second. Nicklas also found the outfield, as he singled up the middle sending Klingensmith home.

The Skyhawks held the Greyhounds to no runs and one hit in four innings, as Stonehill added two more runs to the scoreboard with no outs, cutting Assumption's lead to four, 11-7. Nicklas tallied his second single of the game, driving Bowler home and Steve Lee (Braintree, Massachusetts/Braintree) flied out to deep right field scoring Klingensmith from third.

Baseball (7-19, 2-7 NE10) will host Assumption College on Thursday, April 13 with a first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m. on Lou Gorman Field.
