Lee Drives in Game-Winning Run to Top Bentley, 5-4

Lee drives in the game-winning run in the top of the eighth

WALTHAM, Mass. (April 3, 2017) – The Stonehill College baseball team held on for a 5-4 victory over Northeast-10 Conference foe Bentley University Monday afternoon at DeFelice Field in Waltham, Massachusetts.

Lee drove in Sabo from third for the victory in the eighth inning

Ben Monte (New Haven, Connecticut/Guilford) batted 3-for-4 with one run scored, one walk and a double, as Harrison Sabo (Wilton, Connecticut/Wilton) and Steve Lee (Braintree, Massachusetts/Braintree) each recorded two hits apiece. Lee and Joe Klingensmith (Topsfield, Massachusetts/Masconomet) tallied RBIs for the Skyhawks. Jeremy Roberts (Reading, Massachusetts/Malden Catholic) and Patrick Hurley (Roslindale, Massachusetts/Catholic Memorial) gave up 13 hits, as Hurley earned his first victory of the season.

Stonehill got on board first with two runs in the top of the first, as Monte took second on back-to-back errors by the Falcons. He scored right after as Patrick Downey (Cheshire, Connecticut/Xavier) drove him in on a fielding error by the third baseman. With two outs, Klingensmith singled to the right side scoring Downey and tallying an RBI for a 2-0 lead.

Roberts held Bentley to two hits in the bottom of the first and the Falcons left two runners on base to give the Skyhawks the momentum heading into the top of the second. Matthew Rocco (Newington, Connecticut/Newington) singled to right center as the second batter up and advanced to second on Monte's single through the left side. With a 1-2 count, Rocco scored as Downey singled to left field, extending the lead to three, 3-0.

Bentley cut the deficit to two, 3-1, with two outs in the bottom of the second off a wild pitch and a fielding error, scoring Gino Fordiani from first.

Neither team was able to string together hits until Stonehill got back the run in the top of the sixth as John Orzechkowski (Monroe, Connecticut/Masuk) stole third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher, 4-1.

In the bottom of the frame, the Falcons fought back with four hits and three runs scored. Nick Neshe singled through the left side as the lead off batter and Austin Farry followed with a single to left, advancing him to second. With one out, Liam Matheson singled to left driving in Neshe and Farry, cutting the Skyhawks' lead to one, 4-3. Figueira hit a sacrifice fly to right field, tying the game, 4-4, as Peter Bocchino scored from third.

Neither team was successful in the seventh inning, but Stonehill would see the game-winning hit in the top of the eighth from Lee who drove the ball to left field on the first pitch. After a ground out from Klingensmith, Sabo tripled to right field on a 2-2 count, making it easy for Lee to drive in sophomore from third.

Hurley held the Falcons to two hits and no runs in the 3.0 innings pitched, fending off Bentley from scoring and earning his first victory of the season.
