Baseball Splits With Post On Last Day in Florida

Downey batted 3-for-5 with one double in the twin bill

PALM BEACH, Fla. (March 11, 2017) - The Stonehill College baseball team split with Post University in its last day playing in Florida at the Santaluces Sports Complex Saturday afternoon. 

Game 1: Stonehill 0 – Post 3

Stonehill's Ben Monte (New Haven, Connecticut/Guilford), Justin NIcklas (Foxboro,Massachusetts/St.Sebastian's), Eddie Bowler (Hingham, Massachusetts/Hingham), Patrick Downey (Cheshire, Connecticut/Xavier) and John Orzechowski (Monroe, Connecticut/Masuk) each recorded a hit for the Skyhawks, as Downey and Orzechowski launched doubles.

Stonehill allowed one run in the bottom of the second as Don Walsh singled to left field in between the five-six spot advancing to third on a bunt by Rosario Missiti. Walsh crossed home on a wild pitch and then Patrick Nicholson (Middleboro, Massachusetts/Middleboro) got out of the inning with a two fly outs and a ground out.

The Eagles got in another run in the bottom of the third extending its lead to two, 2-0. Alex Wright singled to center field and the n stole second and third to get in scoring position for Joey Picone who grounded out to shortstop for the second out but got the run in, 2-0.

Stonehill recorded hits in each of the remaining innings, as the offense could not string together hits.

Post scored one more insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as Walsh started off the inning with a single through the right side and Missiti also reached on an error by the pitcher. Walsh was forced out at third by a fielder's choice and Mike Munson grounded out to first base but scored Missiti from third, 3-0.

Game 2: Stonehill 2 – Post 0

Joe Klingensmith (Topsfield, Massachusetts/Masconomet) kicked off the bottom of the second with a leadoff walk and Alex Hurley (Rumford, Rhode Island/Worcester Academy) was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Alexander Joyce (Newton, Massachusetts/Newton North) executed a sacrifice bunt advancing Hurley to second and Klingensmith to third. Brandon Nevius (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) came up with one out and grounded out to second scoring Klingensmith for a 1-0 advantage.

With one out in the top of the third, Luke Leonardi singled through the left side of the field and Cartagena reached first on an error. Wright came up and singled through the right side as Cartagena and Leonardi advanced one base each. Pat Shore (Norwood, Massachusetts/Catholic Memorial) got out of the bases loaded jam with a pop up to second base and a foul out to first.

The Skyhawks extended its lead to two, 2-0, in the bottom of the third as Downey singled to center field and Orzechkowski advanced to second. Bowler also singled during the inning through the left side tallying an RBI as Orzechkowski crossed home. Klingensmith walked to get bases loaded, but was short lived as a popup to second base and Downey was caught stealing home for the second and third outs.

The Eagles weren't able to string together any hits, but they were able to tally five hits throughout the game and draw one walk, while the Skyhawks connected on seven hits and drew four walks including three hit by pitch.

The Skyhawks (5-10) head back to Massachusetts for a doubleheader against Molloy College on Saturday, March 18 in Rockville, New York with first pitch at 1:00 p.m.
