Baseball Drops Twin Bill Against Wilmington (Del.)

Skyhawks totaled 13 hits in two seven-inning games

BOCA RATON, Fla. (March 6, 2017) - The Stonehill College baseball team scored late in both games of a double header against Wilmington (Delaware) University with identical scores of 7-3 Monday afternoon at Lynn Baseball Field.

Game 1: Stonehill 3 – Wilmington 7

Justin Nicklas (Foxboro, Massachusetts/St. Sebastian's) went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run scored, while Harrison Sabo (Wilton, Connecticut/Wilton) hit 2-for-4 with one RBI. Ben Monte (New Haven, Connecticut/Guilford) launched his fifth homerun of his career and first of the season.

Wilmington kicked off the game in the bottom of the first inning scoring three runs off of four hits, but left two on base. Julian Kurych doubled to right center, scoring Rocky Ferrier from second and advancing Mike Annone to third. Kendall Small reached first on an error, scoring Annone with one out. Following a strikeout, Frank Nigro tallied a RBI sending Kurych across home for the third run of the inning, 3-0.

Stonehill's Patrick Nicholson (Middleboro, Massachusetts/Middleboro) held the Wildcats scoreless for two innings before Wilmington went on a four-run rally, extending its lead to six, 7-1. The Skyhawks were able to squeeze in a run in the top of the fourth as Monte extended and homered to right field for his first of the season and fifth of his career.

Eddie Magi (Fairfield, Connecticut/Fairfield Ludlowe) contained the Wildcats to no hits in the bottom of the fifth and sixth, as the Skyhawks were able to  cut the deficit to four,7-3, after Nicklas scored on a wild pitch in the top of the sixth and Tyler Carey (Raynham, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham) crossed home off a single from Sabo.

Game 2: Stonehill 3 – Wilmington 7

Alex Hurley (Rumford, Rhode Island/Worcester Academy) batted 1-for-3 with a triple, two RBI and one run scored. Daniel Paul (Farmington, Connecticut/Avon Old Farms) threw four innings and allowed only two hits, no earned runs and struck out three.

Wilmington was successful in three of the seven innings, as the Wildcats saw an early 4-0 lead in the top of the fourth off of five hits.

Stonehill's first hit came in the bottom of the second when Sabo doubled down the right field line with one out. But, the Skyhawks were unsuccessful as he was left on base.

The Wildcats picked up a run, 5-0, in the top of the third Kurych was hit by a pitch and Regan Hidalgo singled advancing Kurych to second. Nick Macy also singled to get the bases loaded for Logan Gilbert who hit a base hit scoring Kurych.

The next inning, Kurych was again hit by a pitch, advancing Annone to second, Max Carney to third and scoring Ferrier. Wilmington also saw Carney score off of a fielder's choice from Kendall Small, 7-0.

Paul was able to fend off the Wildcats for four-straight innings after the fourth, as Stonehill closed the game with three runs off of four hits in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Joe Klingensmith (Topsfield, Massachusetts/Masconomet) doubled to center field, as Joyce singled through the right side advancing him to third. Hurley tripled down the right field line tallying two RBI which included Joyce and Klingensmith. Vargas followed with the Skyhawks' fourth-straight hit of the inning, launching a double to left field scoring Hurley from third, 7-3.

The Skyhawks will face Bloomfield College on Tuesday, March 7 at 10 a.m. at the Lynn Baseball Field.
