Nicklas went 3-for-4 with one RBI for the Skyhawks

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (February 24, 2017) – The Stonehill College baseball team got out to a quick 2-0 lead, but it was short lived as the University of New Haven found its groove for a 8-3 victory over the Skyhawks in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on Saturday night.

Stonehill's Justin Nicklas (Foxboro, Massachusetts/St. Sebastian's) led the Skyhawks' offense batting 3-for-4, recording a double, scoring one run and tallying an RBI. Steve Lee (Braintree, Massachusetts/Braintree), Ben Monte (New Haven, Connecticut/Guilford) and Alex Hurley (Rumford, Rhode Island/Worcester Academy) also launched doubles in the game, but it was not enough to edge the Chargers.

New Haven saw Tom Walraven and Robert Petrillo bat 2-for-4, as Jack Zagaja launched two homeruns in his 2-for-3 offensive attack, which included five RBI.

The Skyhawks' Matthew Rocco (Newington, Connecticut/Newington) singled in the top of the third and Lee doubled advancing Rocco but he was tagged out as the ball was shot from left field to shortstop to catcher. Monte tallied his first hit of the game, as the ball reached the outfield, easily scoring Lee for the first run of the game. Harrison Sabo (Wilton, Connecticut/Wilton) and Nicklas singled bringing Monte home before Sabo was out at third for a 2-0 lead in favor of the Skyhawks.

The Chargers' Walraven singled in the bottom of the fourth and he advanced to second and third on throwing errors. Nick Russo launched a fly ball out to centerfield for a sacrifice, cutting the Skyhawks lead to one, 2-1. Petrillo and Nick Perrelli reached base before Zagaja came to the plate with two outs crushing a long ball over the fence for a three-run homerun, giving New Haven its first lead of the game, 4-2.

Stonehill went down one, two, three in the top of the fifth, as New Haven's Walraven launched the Charger's second homerun of the game over the fence for a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Skyhawks were able to cut the deficit to two, 5-3, in the top of the sixth, as the team rallied with two outs scoring Nicklas off a single by Joe Klingensmith (Topsfield, Massachusetts/Masconomet) and an error by the Chargers. New Haven responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth as Petrillo scored with no outs and Zagaja tallied his second homerun of the game, this time a two-run homerun, 8-3.

Baseball (1-3) takes on its final opponent of the weekend before traveling back to Massachusetts, Queens (N.Y.) College with a 9:00 a.m. first pitch.
