Skyhawks whiff 12 times, drop Northeast Divisional game

WALTHAM, Mass. (April 27, 2016) – The Stonehill College baseball team, ranked sixth in this week's NCAA Baseball East Regional Ranking, fell victim to a dominant pitching performance by senior righty Will Alden (Westford, Massachusetts/Westford Academy) as Bentley University defeated the Skyhawks 6-2 in Northeast-10 Northeast Divisional action at DeFelice Field today.

Alden went the distance against Stonehill today, improving to 2-4 on the year after pitching all nine innings and allowing two runs (one earned), while racking up 12 strikeouts and walking just one batter.

Graduate student Ryan O'Connor (Newburyport, Massachusetts/Newburyport) led Bentley at the plate today, going 4-for-5 with an RBI and run scored. Senior Zachary Littman (Abington, Massachusetts/Abington) and junior Justin Ashworth (Orange, Connecticut/Amity Regional) each went 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored, while graduate student Mike Muir (Bridgewater, Massachusetts/Xaverian Brothers) finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and run.

Stonehill jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third when Nunez connected on a leadoff triple and Hoyt followed up with a single through the left side of the infield to record an RBI. Hoyt then stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. After junior Steve Lee (Braintree, Massachusetts/Braintree) struck out swinging, Hoyt scurried home on a wild pitch to score the second run of the inning.

Bentley cut into the lead in the bottom half of the inning, as Ashworth singled to left field and senior Brian Rocha (Rehoboth, Massachusetts/Dighton-Rehoboth Reg.) followed up with a single to put two men on base with no outs. After both runners were advanced on a sacrifice bunt, Ashworth came around to score on an RBI groundout.
