Baseball Rides Strong Pitching to Sweep of Saint Michael’s


Junior Jeremy Roberts pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts while only allowing one run in the opener.

Starters Jeremy Roberts and John Hauck combine for 14 strikeouts, one run in 16 innings

EASTON, Mass. (April 23, 2016) – Stonehill College utilized strong starting pitching performances from junior Jeremy Roberts (Reading, Massachusetts/Malden Catholic) and senior John Hauck (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania/Penn-Trafford) and a 19-hit attack at the plate to earn a pair of victories against Saint Michael's College this afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division baseball action at Lou Gorman Field. Stonehill posted a 3-1 win in the opener, before cruising to a 7-1 victory in game two.

Roberts earned the win in game one, improving to 3-3 this season after pitching a complete game and giving up just one run on five hits to go with eight strikeouts and one walk. Hauck tossed seven shutout frames, striking out six and allowing just two hits to pick up the victory.

Senior outfielder Eric Schneider (Camarillo, California/St. Bonaventure) paced Stonehill at the plate, finishing 4-for-8 with three RBI. Classmate Chris Hoyt (Walpole, Massachusetts/Xaverian Brothers) recorded a hit, three runs and four stolen bases, while Brian Campbell (Franklin, Massachusetts/Mount Saint Charles) registered a pair of hits, two RBI and a run.

Senior Nick Addona (Cary, North Carolina/Green Hope) and junior Drew Salk (Billerica, Massachusetts/Billerica Memorial) each posted a pair of hits to lead Saint Michael's, while sophomore Peter Bocchino (Saugus, Massachusetts/The Governor's Academy) knocked in the lone Purple Knight's RBI on the day.

 

Stonehill 3, Saint Michael's 1

Roberts pitched a gem in game one, limiting Saint Michael's to five hits and one run. Stonehill got on the board first in the bottom of the first as junior Steve Lee (Braintree, Massachusetts/Braintree) worked a one out walk and Campbell advanced him to second on a groundout. Schneider then singled to left field to score Lee from second and give the Skyhawks the early advantage.

Saint Michael's tied the game at one in the top of the fourth inning when Balk led off with a double and Bocchino hit a one out single to left field to drive the runner in.

Stonehill took the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh. Junior Ben Monte (New Haven, Connecticut/Guilford) connected on a triple to deep centerfield and classmate Eddie Bowler (Hingham, Massachusetts/Hingham) roped a single over first base to plate Monte and give the Skyhawks a 2-1 lead. The Skyhawks added an insurance run in the eighth, as Lee hit a two out double and Campbell drove him in with a single to left field.

Roberts pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to complete the game and give him his third complete game of the season, dropping his earned run average to 2.38 over 56.2 innings.

 

Stonehill 7, Saint Michael's 1


Senior John Hauck improved to 4-0 on the year with seven scoreless innings in game two.

Hauck improved to a perfect 4-0 on the season with seven scoreless innings. Stonehill for the second straight game scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning, as Hoyt nearly single handedly gave the Skyhawks the lead. The senior singled to lead off the inning, stole second base and then subsequently stole third base. Schneider then singled to left field to score Hoyt, pushing his RBI total up to 23 on the year.

Stonehill scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, when Hoyt walked and stole second base to put a runner in immediate scoring position. Hoyt then stole third for the second time of the game and was driven in when Campbell singled to leftfield. After Schneider singled to centerfield to move Campbell over to second base, Bowler singled up the middle to drive in a run and make the score 3-0.

Stonehill started to pull away in the seventh, scoring two runs to take a controlling 5-0 lead over Saint Michael's. Lee led off the inning by reaching base on a hit-by-pitch and stole second base. Schneider recorded his second RBI of the game when he singled to left field and freshman Harrison Sabo (Wilton, Connecticut/Wilton) knocked in Schneider's pinch runner, freshman Patrick Downey (Cheshire, Connecticut/Xavier).

After Saint Michael's broke its scoreless drought in the eighth with a run, Stonehill responded with two more in the bottom half of the inning. Sophomore Alex Hurley (Rumford, Rhode Island/Worcester Academy) and Downey both recorded RBI singles, and the Skyhawks finished the sweep of the Purple Knights.

Stonehill (21-13, 10-6 NE-10) returns to Lou Gorman Field tomorrow for another doubleheader against Saint Michael's (2-22, 1-12 NE-10) starting at noon, before hitting the road on Wednesday for a single contest against Bentley University.
