Baseball Continues To Roll With Win Over Nyack


Senior John Hauck improved to 3-0 on the season behind a career high 11 strikeouts.

Skyhawks win seventh straight after starting season 2-5

PALM BEACH, Fla. (March 11, 2016) – The Stonehill College baseball team continues to roll as their winning streak reached seven games after defeating Nyack College 9-4 this afternoon in non-conference action at the Santaluces Complex in Palm Beach, Florida.

Senior righty John Hauck (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania/Penn-Trafford) moved to 3-0 on the season after striking out a career high 11 batters as he went six innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk. Junior Aubrey Solomon (Groton, Massachusetts/Lawrence Academy) earned his fourth save of the season after pitching 2.2 innings of relief, striking out five batters while giving up one run with three hits.

Senior Chris Hoyt (Walpole, Massachusetts/Xaverian Brothers) went 3-for-5 with a homerun, two runs scored, a RBI and a stolen base, while classmate Brian Campbell (Franklin, Massachusetts/Mount Saint Charles) also tallied three hits with two doubles, two RBI and two runs. Senior Eric Schneider (Camarillo, California/St. Bonaventure) finished 3-for-4 with a double and two runs and sophomore Alexander Joyce (Newton, Massachusetts/Newton North) also posted a multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-3 with a RBI and run.

Senior Craig Jacobs (Hawthorne, New Jersey) lasted six innings for Nyack, giving up seven runs on ten hits, two walks and four strikeouts. Senior John Kennedy (Fort Lauderdale, Florida) went 2-for-5 with a triple and a run. Junior Ryan Kahl (Sebastian, Florida) finished 1-for-4 with two RBI, while junior Reuben Correa (Orlando, Florida) knocked in a run and scored a run.

Hoyt opened the bottom of the first inning with a leadoff homerun to give the Skyhawks an early 1-0 lead. Junior Eddie Bowler (Hingham, Massachusetts/Hingham) hit a sacrifice fly to score Campbell later in the inning, as Schneider came around to score on the throw and junior Ben Monte (New Haven, Connecticut/Guilford) advanced to third base. Monte then took off and stole home to push the Skyhawk lead to 4-0.

Stonehill piled on with two more runs in the second inning as Joyce led off with a double to right center field and Hoyt singled to the shortstop. Hoyt then stole second and junior Steve Lee (Braintree, Massachusetts/Braintree) walked to load the bases. With the bases loaded, Campbell delivered a two RBI single plating Joyce and Hoyt.

Nyack cut the lead in half in the top of the fifth, scoring three runs on two hits. After Hauck struck the first two batters out, junior Christian Benitez (El Paso, Texas) started the two out rally by reaching first on a hit by pitch. Benitez then advanced to second on a wild pitch and again to third on another wild pitch. As Benitez raced to third, Joyce over threw the bag and Benitez waltzed home, scoring the warriors first run. The next two batters reached base for Nyack and Kahl followed up with a two RBI double to center field.

The Skyhawks got a run back in the bottom of the fifth as Campbell and Schneider registered hits, with Monte hitting into a fielder's choice to bring Campbell home. Stonehill capped the scoring in the seventh, where Monte proving to be a one man highlight show. Monte singled to center to record a RBI, then stole second base and subsequently stole third base. After Bowler walked and senior Brian Hocking (Duxbury, Massachusetts/BC High) was hit by a pitch, Joyce hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Monte to give the Skyhawks their ninth and final run.

Stonehill wraps up their Florida trip with a game against Concordia (N.Y.) College tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. The Skyhawks then return home with a weekend series at Molloy College on the March 19th and 20th.
