Skyhawks defeat Concordia (N.Y.) 14-2 before taking down Assumption 7-2 in game two
WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 10, 2016) – Head coach Pat Boen earned his 500th and 501st career victory today as the Stonehill College baseball team returned to action with a pair of victories at Alfond Stadium in Winter Park, Florida. Stonehill topped Concordia (N.Y.) College, 14-2, in the morning, before defeating NE-10 foe Assumption College by a score of 7-2 in the afternoon.
Three-time NE-10 Coach of the Year Pat Boen reached the big milestone today with the Skyhawks first win of the day, pushing his record to 500-355-3 (.585). Now in his 19th year at the helm of the baseball program, Boen has guided Stonehill to 30 wins and an NE-10 Tournament appearance in five of the last six seasons.
Junior first baseman Eddie Bowler (Hingham, Massachusetts/Hingham), led the Skyhawks offensively as he went 6-for-8 with 2 RBI and a run scored. Senior outfielder Eric Schneider (Camarillo, California/St. Bonaventure) finished 3-for-8 with six RBI, four runs, a stolen base and a homerun, while junior Steve Lee (Braintree, Massachusetts/Braintree) pieced together three hits with four runs and two RBI. Senior Chris Hoyt (Walpole, Massachusetts/Xaverian Brothers) swiped two bags to go along with two hits and classmate Brian Campbell (Franklin, Massachusetts/Mount Saint Charles) accrued three hits with three runs, two RBI and a stolen base.
Stonehill 14, Concordia (N.Y.) 2
Sophomore Michael Young (Mashpee, Massachusetts/Pope John Paul II) got the start on the mound for the Skyhawks in game one, pitching seven strong innings, giving up two earned runs on three hits, one walk and nine strikeouts. Freshman Aran Hamilton-Grenham (Woburn, Massachusetts/Buckingham Browne & Nichols) came on in relief and pitched a perfect eighth and ninth inning with two strikeouts.
Stonehill jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning behind a RBI single by Bowler to score Schneider, who walked and stole second base. Concordia got a run back in the top of the fourth, using a triple by junior German Dilone (Bronx, New York/Cardinal Hayes) to cut the lead in half. That's as close as they would come, as Stonehill scored three more runs in the fourth and six runs in the seventh to blow the game open. Bowler, who had a career day at the plate, led off the sixth innings with a single to get the rally started. The Skyhawks then took advantage of Concordia's wild pitching, as the Clippers walked five batters in the inning, leading to six runs.

The Skyhawks capped the scoring in the bottom of the eighth, plating three runs. Sophomore Isiah Nunez (Brooklyn, New York/Berkshire School) roped a double to left center field to score classmate Alex Hurley (Rumford, Rhode Island/Worcester Academy), while freshman Matthew Rocco (Newington, Connecticut/Newington) knocked in his second career RBI, hitting a single to second base as sophomore Alexander Joyce (Newton, Massachusetts/Newton North) scored.
Stonehill 7, Assumption 2
Junior lefty Jeremy Roberts (Franklin, Massachusetts/Mount Saint Charles) got the nod for the Skyhawks in the second game, pitching to the tune of 6.2 innings, two earned runs, three walks and six strikeouts. Senior Mike Krupczak (Springfield, Massachusetts/Cathedral) and sophomore Matt Peters (Portsmouth, Rhode Island/Portsmouth) combined to go the remaining 2.1 innings unscathed.
After three shutout innings by both sides, Stonehill broke the deadlock with three runs in the fourth. Hoyt got the inning started by reaching first base on an error, Campbell followed up with a single that advanced Hoyt to third. Schneider then stepped to the plate and singled to right field, driving in Hoyt. With one out, Campbell got aggressive and stole third base, causing the catcher to overthrow the bag, allowing Campbell and Schneider to cross the plate.
Assumption got a run back in the top of the sixth as sophomore Mike Caggeshall (Shrewsbury, Massachusetts/Shrewsbury) hit a RBI single to center field. After Stonehill went down in order in the bottom of the sixth, the Greyhounds hit a solo homerun to bring the score to 3-2. Sophomore Justin Nicklas (Foxboro, Massachusetts/St. Sebastian's) gave the Skyhawks some breathing room with his RBI double in the seventh, but Schneider really opened up the game when he hit a three run homerun in the bottom of the eighth inning. Peters put the Greyhounds down in order in the ninth inning to secure Stonehill's sixth straight win.
Stonehill is back in action tomorrow as they take on Nyack College for a start time of 11:00 a.m. The Skyhawks are scheduled to play Concordia (N.Y.) on Saturday for their last spring game in Florida, before returning home to square off with Molloy College in New York.
