Baseball Piles Up Runs In Big Win Over Post

Senior Brian Campbell finished 3-for-4 with three runs, a RBI and a stolen base. He also fell just a single shy of hitting for the cycle.

Head Coach Pat Boen now one win shy of 500 for his career

PALM BEACH, Fla. (March 9, 2016) – The Stonehill College baseball team continued its 10-game spring break trip today, winning their fourth straight in big time fashion, recording 20 hits and scoring 19 runs in defeating Post University 19-4 in non-conference action at the Santaluces Complex in Palm Beach, Florida.

Senior outfielder Brian Campbell (Franklin, Massachusetts/Mount Saint Charles) and classmate Chris Hoyt (Walpole, Massachusetts/Xaverian Brothers) put on an offensive clinic today, combining to go 6-for-8 with seven RBI, three runs, three doubles, a triple, a stolen base and a homerun. Campbell fell just a single shy of hitting for his second cycle of the season. Freshman Harry Sabo (Wilton, Connecticut/Wilton) had a breakout game, finished 3-for-6 with a double, three runs and a RBI. Junior Ben Monte went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, while Junior Steve Lee (Braintree, Massachusetts/Braintree) drove in three runs.

Sophomore righthander Pat Shore (Norwood, Massachusetts/Catholic Memorial) pitched seven innings, giving up four runs (one earned) on six hits and three walks while striking out four. Freshman Tyler Kovalewich (Colonia, New Jersey/Colonia) took the loss for Post, lasting four innings and allowing five runs (two earned) on six hits and one walk, while striking out three along the way.

This is the third time in four days Stonehill and Post have squared off, with Post sweeping a doubleheader last Saturday in back-to-back pitchers duels, 1-0 and 2-1. The beginning of the game looked more or less like the first two, as both teams failed to get anything started for the first two innings, with Post taking a 1-0 lead headed to the fourth inning.

The Eagles extended their lead, scoring twice more in the top half of the fourth, as junior Rafael Tous (Flemington, New Jersey/Immaculata) and sophomore Don Walsh (Hamilton, New Jersey/Notre Dame Prep) came around to score. Stonehill responded in a big way, scoring five runs on five hits and a walk in the bottom of the fourth. Campbell got the ball rolling, hitting his third homerun of the year, a solo shot, to put the Skyhawks on the board. With two outs, Monte drew a walk and junior Eddie Bowler (Hingham, Massachusetts/Hingham) hit a RBI double, Sabo followed with a RBI single and sophomore Alexander Joyce (Newton, Massachusetts/Newton North) reached base on an error by the third baseman. Sophomore Isiah Nunez (Brooklyn, New York/Berkshire School) then singled and Hoyt drove in a pair with his first double of the game, giving the Skyhawks a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

The Skyhawks scored four more runs in the fifth, highlighted by a triple by Campbell followed by a RBI single by senior Eric Schneider (Camarillo, California/St. Bonaventures). Stonehill kept the momentum up, pouring in five more runs in the sixth. For the second consecutive inning, Campbell led off with an extra base hit, this time smacking a double to put himself in immediate scoring position. Campbell then stole third base and was sent home on a sacrifice fly by Monte. Sabo and Joyce hit back-to-back singles and Nunez walked to load the bases. Hoyt cleared the bases, hitting a three run double and giving him his fifth RBI of the game. The Skyhawks tacked on one more run in the seventh and four more in the eighth to cap their scoring on the afternoon.

Stonehill returns to action tomorrow as Head Coach Pat Boen goes for his 500th win of his career in a doubleheader against Concordia (N.Y.) College and Assumption College. The first game is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. while the second game is set for 2:00 p.m.
