Stonehill’s Bats Come Alive In 7-3 Win Over Wilmington

BOCA RATON, Fla. (March 7, 2016) – The Stonehill College baseball team recorded 12 hits on its way to a 7-3 non-conference victory over Wilmington (Del.) University today on the campus of Lynn University, in Boca Raton, Florida.

Seven of Stonehill's nine starters tallied hits and four of the starters registered multiple hits, led by senior outfielder Chris Hoyt (Walpole, Massachusetts/Xaverian Brothers), who went 3-for-5 with a run scored. Classmate Brian Campbell (Franklin, Massachusetts/Mount Saint Charles) posted a 1-for-4 effort at the plate, hitting his second homerun of the season, scoring two runs and swiping two bases, while senior catcher Eric Schneider (Camarillo, California/St. Bonaventure) added two hits and one run. Junior Ben Monte (New Haven, Connecticut/Guilford) finished 1-for-2 with a triple, two RBI, two runs and a stolen base.

Junior Patrick Hurley (Roslindale, Massachusetts/Catholic Memorial) earned the win for the Skyhawks after striking out two and giving up three runs (one earned) on eight hits over 7.1 innings of work. Classmate Aubrey Solomon (Groton, Massachusetts/Lawrence Academy) recorded his second save of the season, pitching a perfect 1.2 innings of relief, striking out two batters.

Freshman designated hitter Brooks Ryan (Westminster, Maryland/Wintersmill) led the offense for Wilmington, finishing 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Classmate Julian Kurych (Middletown, Delaware/Appoquinimink) added two hits, while junior Rocky Ferrier (Perkasie, Pennsylvania/Pennridge) went 1-for-3 with one RBI and one run.


Junior Ben Monte finished 1-for-2 this afternoon with a two RBI triple, two runs and a stolen base.

Junior Chuck Delagol (Warminster, Pennsylvania/William Tennent) took the loss for Wilmington after giving up two runs (one earned) on seven hits through five frames. Delagol was able to record nine strikeouts while walking just one batter. 

After a scoreless opening two innings, Stonehill got to Delagol in the third, using three hits and an error to score the first run of the game. Sophomore Isiah Nunez (Brooklyn, New York/Berkshire School) got it started with a single to left center. Hoyt followed up with a single through the left side of the infield, advancing Nunez to second. Sophomore Tyler Carey (Raynham, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham) laid down a sacrifice bunt and advanced Hoyt to second base but Nunez was called out trying to advance to third. After Campbell reached base on an error to load the bases, Junior Steve Lee (Braintree, Massachusetts/Braintree) hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Hoyt.

The Skyhawks added to their advantage in the top of the fifth, as Campbell belted a solo homer, and added three more runs in the seventh highlighted by Monte's triple to left center to score Schneider and Campbell.

Wilmington responded in the bottom half of the seventh when Ryan doubled, scoring Ferrier and freshman Dan Hyatt (Newark, Delaware/Conrad to cut the lead to 5-3. Stonehill added insurance runs in the eighth and ninth innings, taking advantage of a failed pickoff attempt on Hoyt to score Nunez in the eighth and an RBI single by junior Eddie Bowler (Hingham, Massachusetts/Hingham) in the ninth.

Stonehill (4-5, 0-0 NE-10) returns to action tomorrow with a noon time contest against Bloomfield College. Wilmington (2-5, 0-0 CACC) will look to bounce back tomorrow with a game at Lynn University.
