Penmen score four unearned runs on just one hit and three errors in the fourth inning

EASTON, Mass. (May 1, 2015) – Southern New Hampshire University, ranked No. 18 in this week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Poll, overcame a two-run deficit with four unearned runs in the fourth inning on its way to a 6-3 victory over Stonehill College this afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division baseball action at Lou Gorman Field.

With the win, Southern New Hampshire clinches the second seed in next week's NE-10 Tournament, and will host Stonehill in a first round contest next Tuesday. The Penmen and Skyhawks are ranked second and third, respectively, in the latest NCAA East Region rankings.

Freshman Michael Young (Mashpee, Massachusetts/Pope John Paul II) took the loss for Stonehill despite striking out nine batters and giving up just one earned run over 6.2 frames.

Junior outfielder Brian Campbell (Franklin, Massachusetts/Mount Saint Charles Academy) went 2-for-4 with a double and a solo home run, while classmate Chris Hoyt (Walpole, Massachusetts/Xaverian Brothers) and sophomore Ben Monte (New Haven, Connecticut/Guilford) each singled and drove in a run.

Sophomore Mike Robert (Nashua, New Hampshire/Nashua North) picked up the win for the Penmen after recording six strikeouts and giving up three runs on six hits over six innings of work. Freshman Jake Walkinshaw (Seymour, Connecticut/Seymour) earned his second save of the season with two scoreless frames of relief.

Senior Kyle McGinnity (Northboro, Massachusetts/Algonquin Regional) provided the biggest hit of the game for Southern New Hampshire, as his triple in the fourth inning cleared the bases and gave the visitors the lead for good. Juniors Ryan Gendron (Nashua, New Hampshire/Nashua South) and Lorenzo Papa (Stoneham, Massachusetts/Arlington Catholic) and sophomore Carson Helms (Farmington, Connecticut/Farmington) each added two hits and one run for the Penmen.

Junior Brian Campbell went 2-for-4 with a double and a solo home run.

Southern New Hampshire jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by senior Alejandro Diaz (Old Bridge, New Jersey/Old Bridge), but the Skyhawks evened the score in the bottom half of the inning on Campbell's third home run of the season.

Stonehill then pulled ahead in the second, plating a pair of runs on consecutive two-out RBI singles by Monte and Hoyt. The Penmen would go down in order in the third, before scoring four times in the fourth despite recording just one hit.

Sophomore Derek Bauer (Millis, Massachusetts/Millis) reached with one out on a Stonehill fielding error, and Gendron followed with a walk before Papa was awarded first base on a catcher's interference call to load up the bases. After Young recorded a strikeout for the second out of the inning, McGinnity drove in all three baserunners with a triple to right field, and scored himself when the relay throw was off target.

Stonehill would only advance one runner into scoring position for the remainder of the game, as senior shortstop Dan Fratus (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Plymouth North) led off the sixth with a bloop double down the right field line, but was stranded there as the next three batters were retired.

Southern New Hampshire added an insurance run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Cam Oliveira (Tewksbury, Massachusetts/Tewksbury Memorial), while Walkinshaw gave up just one hit over his two innings of work.

Stonehill (28-11-1, 15-7 NE-10) and Southern New Hampshire (30-9, 16-4 NE-10) will wrap up their regular season schedules with a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon as the Skyhawks celebrate Senior Day. First pitch is set for noon at Lou Gorman Field.
