Young Earns NE-10 Rookie Of The Week Honors

Young earns NE-10 Rookie of the Week honors for the first time in his career.

Mashpee, Mass. native struck out eight over 7.2 shutout frames in his first collegiate start on Saturday against Saint Anselm

EASTON, Mass. (April 21, 2015) – Stonehill College freshman right-handed pitcher Michael Young (Mashpee, Massachusetts/Pope John Paul II) has been named the Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Week for baseball, the league office announced yesterday.

Making his first collegiate start on Saturday in Stonehill's 2-0 victory over Saint Anselm College, Young earned the win after striking out eight over 7.2 shutout innings and holding the Hawks to just three hits. The freshman was dominant early and in control throughout for the Skyhawks, facing the minimum of 12 batters through the first four innings before giving up a single in the fifth and then retiring the Hawks in order in the sixth and seventh. Young also retired two batters in the eighth before sophomore Aubrey Solomon (Groton, Massachusetts/Lawrence Academy) took over, getting the final four outs of the game for his sixth save of the season.

Through 11 appearances this spring, Young is 2-1 with a 0.71 earned run average and 29 strikeouts in 25.1 innings of work. He has given up just four runs (two earned) on eight hits while issuing six walks and holding opponents to a .095 batting average. Of the eight hits Young has allowed, just one (a double) has been for extra bases.

The Mashpee, Massachusetts native made his collegiate debut on February 20th in Stonehill's season opener against Mercy College in Myrtle  Beach, South Carolina, striking out one but giving up one run on two hits in an inning of work. Young rebounded from that outing nicely, as he struck out eight and did not give up an earned run over his next six appearances. The freshman's most impressive relief appearance came on April 11th, when he entered the game in the ninth inning at Southern New Hampshire University and recorded seven punchouts while allowing just one hit over five scoreless frames, but Stonehill eventually fell 4-2 in 14 innings.

A 2014 graduate of Pope John Paul II High School in Hyannis, Massachusetts, Young was a three-year letter winner and three-time Cape & Islands League All-Star under head coach Mark Santos. As a senior in 2014, Young earned C&I League MVP and Boston Globe Player of the Year honors as Pope John Paul II went 27-1 and won the Division 4 State Championship.

Stonehill (23-9-1, 11-5 NE-10) will put its seven-game winning streak on the line tomorrow afternoon, as the Skyhawks host Bentley for an NE-10 Northeast Division matchup at 3:30 p.m.
