Rugel strikes out eight in six innings, while offense piles up 16 hits
EASTON, Mass. (April 16, 2015) – Senior righthander Armand Rugel (Middletown, Rhode Island/Middletown) struck out eight batters over six innings and Stonehill College recorded 16 hits on its way to a 10-3 victory over Assumption College this afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division baseball action at Lou Gorman Field.
Stonehill's offense, which matched season-highs in each of its last two games with 17 hits and 12 runs, continued to roll today as the Skyhawks earned their fourth consecutive victory and 20th of the season.
Rugel improved to 5-0 with the win after giving up three runs on seven hits to go with his eight punchouts and two walks in six innings on the mound. Senior Steve Pike (Stoughton, Massachusetts/Catholic Memorial) came on in relief of Rugel and logged two shutout frames, while sophomore Aubrey Solomon (Groton, Massachusetts/Lawrence Academy) struck out two batters in a perfect ninth.
Senior second baseman Christian Baglini (Milford, Connecticut/Notre Dame High) led the Skyhawks at the plate with his third multi-hit game of the week, as he went 3-for-4 with a walk, a double, three RBI and two runs scored. Junior outfielder Brian Campbell (Franklin, Massachusetts/Mount Saint Charles Academy) also recorded three hits to go with one RBI and one run, while classmate Chris Hoyt (Walpole, Massachusetts/Xaverian Brothers) turned in a 2-for-5 effort out of the leadoff spot with one RBI, two runs and two stolen bases. Junior designated hitter Brian Hocking (Duxbury, Massachusetts/BC High) chipped in with two doubles and senior catcher Eric Schneider (Camarillo, California/St. Bonaventure) added a walk, two singles, and two RBI.

Senior Greg O'Donnell (Northbridge, Massachusetts/Northbridge) and freshman Andrew Jaehnig (Quincy, Massachusetts/BC High) each recorded two hits and one RBI for the Greyhounds, while junior Colin Clancy (Chelmsford, Massachusetts/Chelmsford) singled and drove in one run.
Freshman Mike Curtis (Wilmington, Massachusetts/Wilmington), who was among six Assumption pitchers to see action this afternoon, took the loss after giving up five runs on five hits in an inning of work.
After three scoreless frames, the Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth as Jaehnig hit a solo home run over the right center field fence. Stonehill would answer with five runs in the bottom half of the inning, however, and did not trail for the rest of the game.
The Skyhawks loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth before tying the game when freshman Joe Klingensmith (Topsfield, Massachusetts/Masconomet) was hit by a pitch. Classmate Alex Hurley (Rumford, Rhode Island/Worcester Academy) came up next and grounded into a double play, scoring another run, before Hoyt, Baglini, and Campbell delivered three consecutive RBI singles to give Stonehill a 5-1 lead.
Assumption pulled back to within two with single runs in the top of the fifth and sixth innings, but Stonehill got them both back in the bottom of the sixth on Baglini's two-run single. The Skyhawks capped the scoring with three runs on four hits in the eighth, as senior shortstop Dan Fratus (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Plymouth North) recorded a one-out RBI double and two batters later Schneider drove in a pair with a single to left field before being thrown out at second base.
Stonehill (20-9-1, 8-5 NE-10), which has reached 20 wins in each of head coach Pat Boen's 18 seasons, will be off tomorrow before opening a three-game weekend series against Saint Anselm College at Lou Gorman Field on Saturday at noon. Assumption (8-19, 4-8 NE-10) returns home to host Southern New Hampshire University for a three-game series which is also set to begin on Saturday.
