Nicholson, Young and Solomon hold Falcons to three hits as Skyhawks snap three-game losing streak

WALTHAM, Mass. (April 8, 2015) – Junior lefthander Patrick Nicholson (Middleboro, Massachusetts/Middleboro) tossed six innings of two-hit ball and sophomore first baseman Eddie Bowler (Hingham, Massachusetts/Hingham) went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI as Stonehill College held on for a 3-2 victory at Bentley University this afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division baseball action at DeFelice Field.

Nicholson carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, before eventually running into trouble in the seventh as Bentley senior Tom Nagy (Fairfield, Connecticut/Ludlowe) led off with a home run and junior Zachary Littman (Abington, Massachusetts/Abington) followed with a walk. Freshman Michael Young (Mashpee, Massachusetts/Pope John Paul II) took over for Nicholson and allowed one run to score before working out of the seventh and cruising through the eighth, while sophomore Aubrey Solomon (Groton, Massachusetts/Lawrence Academy) retired the Falcons in order in the ninth for his NE-10 leading fifth save of the season. Nicholson, who earned the win to improve to 4-0, finished with five strikeouts and four walks.

Junior outfielder Brian Campbell (Franklin, Massachusetts/Mount Saint Charles) matched Bowler's 2-for-4 effort with a double and drove in one run, while classmate Brian Hocking (Duxbury, Massachusetts/BC High) added two hits and senior shortstop Dan Fratus (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Plymouth North) doubled, walked twice, and scored a run.

Nagy drove in one of Bentley's two runs with his seventh-inning solo homer, while freshman Mike Samko (Arlington, Massachusetts/Buckingham, Browne, & Nichols) added an RBI double later in the frame. Classmate Nick Neshe (Waltham, Massachusetts/Waltham) broke up Nicholson's no-hitter with his sixth-inning single, and junior Bryan Rocha (Rehoboth, Massachusetts/Dighton-Rehoboth) drew three walks.

Sophomore Nick Taber (Eastham, Massachusetts/Nauset Regional) got the start for the Falcons and took the loss after giving up three runs on seven hits over six innings of work.

After three scoreless frames, Stonehill took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth on consecutive doubles by Fratus and Bowler. The Skyhawks then tacked on two more runs in the fifth with the help of three hits and a free pass.

Senior second baseman Christian Baglini (Milford, Connecticut/Notre Dame High) walked with one out and came around to score on Campbell's double to right field, and two batters later Bowler plated Campbell with a two-out single.

After recording their first hit but leaving two runners on base in the sixth, the Falcons broke through with a pair of runs in the seventh to cut their deficit to one. Nagy led off with a solo homer over the right field fence, and Littman drew a walk to end Nicholson's outing. Young came on in relief and gave up an RBI double to Samko before retiring the next three batters in order. Young and Solomon would hold Bentley to just one baserunner the rest of the way, as Stonehill held on to snap its three-game losing streak.
