Stonehill Stays Hot With 10-2 Win At Assumption


Senior Zack Soulier picked up his seventh win of the season today after going seven innings and allowing two runs on four hits while striking out four.

Skyhawks win sixth consecutive game, improve to 9-5 in NE-10 Northeast Division

WORCESTER, Mass. (April 25, 2014) – Stonehill College extended its winning streak to a season-high six games with a 10-2 victory at Assumption College this afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division baseball action at Rocheleau Field.

Senior Zack Soulier (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) improved to 7-2 with the win after going seven strong innings and giving up just two runs on four hits while striking out four and walking three. Juniors Steve Pike (Stoughton, Mass./Catholic Memorial) and Ryan Rougeot (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) combined to pitch a pair of perfect innings to close out the contest.

Sophomore Brian Campbell (Franklin, Mass./Mount Saint Charles) led Stonehill at the plate, as he went 3-for-4  a triple, one RBI and a pair of runs, while senior Billy Karalis (Pawtucket, R.I./Bishop Feehan) was 2-for-5 with a grand slam. Sophomore Chris Hoyt (Walpole, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) went 2-for-4 with a run and one RBI, and senior Dan Fratus (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) added two hits, including a solo homer.


Sophomore Brian Campbell went 3-for-4 with a triple and one RBI as Stonehill won its sixth straight game this afternoon.

Junior Greg O'Donnell (Northbridge, Mass./Northbridge) was the lone Greyhound to post a multi-hit effort, as he went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while senior Ysander Figueroa (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Tech) and sophomore Michael Panza (West Haven, Conn./Notre Dame) recorded one hit apiece.

Sophomore Kevin O'Connor (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) took the loss for Assumption after giving up four runs on nine hits in six innings of work. Freshman Nick Fenuccio (Keene, N.H./Keene) took over for O'Conner and allowed six runs on four hits in just 1.2 innings on the mound.

Stonehill, which entered today's action having scored eight runs in each of its last two games, stayed hot at the plate, as the Skyhawks racked up 13 hits while tying their season high for runs. Hoyt got the scoring started in the third inning with an RBI single up the middle, and Campbell followed with a run-scoring triple to left center. Junior Christian Baglini (Milford, Conn./Notre Dame High) plated Stonehill's third run of the frame on the next play with a single to center field, scoring Campbell.

The Skyhawks added to their lead in the fourth, as Fratus led off with a towering solo shot to center field, but Assumption got a pair of runs back in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run double by O'Donnell.

Neither team scored in the fifth, sixth, or seventh innings, but Stonehill broke the game open with six runs in the top of the eighth to go up 10-2. With one out and one runner on base in the eighth, junior Eric Schneider (Camarillo, Calif./St. Bonaventure) delivered an RBI triple to left center, before scoring on a wild pitch. Fratus grounded out for the second out of the inning, but the next three batters reached to load the bases. Karalis came up next and launched a grand slam to right field, good for his team-leading sixth homer of the season.

Stonehill (24-15, 13-7 NE-10) will be back in action this weekend with a key three-game series at Northeast Division-leading and No. 10 nationally-ranked Southern New Hampshire University. The Skyhawks will take on the Penmen in a single game tomorrow night at 7 p.m., before playing a doubleheader on Sunday at 2 p.m. Assumption (14-18, 8-14 NE-10) will hit the road tomorrow for a twinbill at Saint Anselm College.
