Stonehill Piles Up 30 Hits, 18 Runs in Sweep Of Saint Anselm

MANCHESTER, N.H. (April 13, 2014) – Stonehill College posted its best offensive effort of the season, as it piled up 30 hits and 18 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Saint Anselm College today in Northeast-10 Northeast Division baseball action at  Sullivan Park.

Juniors Christian Baglini (Milford, Conn./Notre Dame High) and Eric Schneider (Camarillo, Calif./St. Bonaventure) and sophomore Brian Hocking (Duxbury, Mass./BC High) fueled the offensive outburst today, as they each recorded five hits. Schneider went 5-for-10 with a double and four RBI, while Hocking was 5-for-9 with a home run and three RBI and Baglini was 5-for-10 with a double and three runs. Sophomore Brian Campbell (Franklin, Mass./Mount Saint Charles) went 4-for-10 on the day with three runs, two doubles, and a walk, and senior Dan Fratus (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) added two doubles and two RBI.

Saint Anselm was led by junior Joe Morin (Salem, N.H./Salem), sophomore Ken Morrisino (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow), and freshman Frank D'Amato (Cranston, R.I./La Salle Academy), who had two hits each in today's opener, while senior Andrew Chandler (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) had a pair of hits and one RBI in game two.

Stonehill won today's opener on the strength of four-hit efforts from Baglini and Hocking, and a solid outing by sophomore right hander John Hauck (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn-Trafford). Baglini went 4-for-5 at the plate with a double and a pair of runs, while Hocking was 4-for-4 with one RBI and one run. Schneider recorded two hits and three RBI, and senior Billy Karalis (Pawtucket, R.I./Bishop Feehan) had one hit with two RBI.

Hauck earned the win after going five innings and allowing three runs on six hits to go with three strikeouts and two walks. Freshman Jeremy Roberts (Reading, Mass./Malden Catholic) took over for Hauck and gave up one run on three hits in 2.2 innings of work, and junior Steve Pike (Stoughton, Mass./Catholic Memorial) pitched a perfect 1.1 frames to close it out for Stonehill.

Saint Anselm was led by Morrisino, Morin, and D'Amato. Morrisino went 2-for-5 with two runs, while D'Amato was 2-for-3 with a walk and Morin was 2-for-4 with one run and two RBI.

Senior Zachary Brian (Stoneham, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) took the loss for the Hawks after lasting just four innings and giving up seven runs (six hits) on ten hits with two strikeouts and no walks.

After a scoreless first, Stonehill put five runs on the board in a big second inning. Schneider, Hocking, and senior Anthony Pagano (Cranston, R.I./Cranston West) recorded RBI singles, and Karalis wrapped up the scoring with a two-run double to right field.

Saint Anselm got a pair of runs back in the third inning on RBI singles by Morin and senior Matt Wojichowski (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth), but Stonehill answered with two more runs of its own in the top of the fifth. The Hawks would add single runs in the fifth and seventh innings, but they were never able to dig themselves out of the five-run deficit from earlier in the contest.

Senior Dan Fratus had two doubles and two RBI in Stonehill's game two victory.

The Skyhawks continued their hitting barrage from game one with a convincing victory in game two, as they racked up 15 more hits and a season-high-tying ten runs. Campbell and Schneider led the way with three hits apiece, while Fratus went 2-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI.

Sophomore Patrick Nicholson (Middleboro, Mass./Middleboro) earned the win for Stonehill after going 5.2 innings and allowing five runs (two earned) on five hits while striking out two and walking three. Classmate Mike Krupczak (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) and junior Armand Rugel (Middletown, R.I./Middletown) combined to shut out the Hawks over the final 3.1 innings.

Sophomore Tyler Buck (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) took the loss for Saint Anselm, as he gave up nine runs (seven earned) on 11 hits in just 3.1 innings of work.

Saint Anselm took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI groundout by senior Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) and an RBI single by freshman MacNeill Finnegan (Old Saybrook, Conn./Xavier), before adding another run the following inning as Lagasse recorded his second RBI of the contest.

Stonehill scored twice in the third, as Fratus plated two runs with a double to left center, but the Skyhawks would erupt for seven runs in the fourth to take a 9-3 lead. Hocking got the scoring started with a two-run shot to center field, and three batters later Campbell doubled to right center, scoring two more runs. Baglini and Schneider would add RBI singles for Stonehill's fifth and sixth runs of the inning, and Fratus came around to score on a throwing error to wrap up the scoring in the frame.

Saint Anselm cut into Stonehill's lead with a pair of runs in the sixth, the second of which came on an RBI single by Chandler, but the Hawks would get no closer.

Stonehill (18-14, 8-7 NE-10) will be back in action on Tuesday with a contest at Bentley University, before hitting the road again on Thursday to play at Mercy College. Stonehill will then return home to host Saint Michael's College for a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. Saint Anselm (10-23, 4-12 NE-10) is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday at Saint Michael's.
