Baseball Downed by Bentley, 3-1

WALTHAM, Mass. (April 24, 2013) – The Stonehill College baseball team fell to the Bentley University Falcons, 3-1 in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup Wednesday afternoon at DeFelice Field in Waltham, Mass.

Freshman infielder Evan Mondor (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) led the way for Bentley. Mondor went 1-for-2 with one walk, one single, one RBI, and one run scored. Senior Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./Lawrence Academy) also collected a RBI for the Falcons in the win.

Senior James DeAlto (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) paced the Skyhawks offense, going 1-for-4 with a single and a run scored. Freshmen Brian Campbell (Franklin, Mass./Mount Saint Charles) and Chris Hoyt (Walpole, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) also collected hits for Stonehill.

Senior pitcher Lamarre Rey (Lynn, Mass./Pingree School) pitched a complete game and earned the win for the Falcons. Rey held Stonehill to one run (unearned) on four hits and one walk, while striking out five.

Sophomore Armand Rugel (Middletown, R.I./Middletown) was tagged with the loss for Stonehill. Rugel pitched a complete game, giving up three runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks, while striking out five.

After three scoreless innings to start the game, the Falcons took the lead with two runs in the fourth. With runners on first and third, Gillis reached on an error by the shortstop to drive in the first run. Three batters later, junior Nate Witkowski (Melrose, Mass./Malden Catholic) reached on an error by the shortstop, scoring Mondor to make it 2-0 Bentley.

The Falcons added a run in the fifth to make it 3-0. After Bryan Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) singled and advanced to third on two sacrifice bunts, Mondor gave the Falcons a three-run lead when he hit a RBI-single to left field.

The Skyhawks launched a comeback bid in the ninth. With DeAlto on first after a single, Campbell stepped to the plate with two outs. He singled to the center fielder, who misplayed the ball allowing DeAlto to score and Campbell to reach third. Rey closed the door when he got the next batter to foul out to right field, ending the game and sealing the win for Bentley.

Stonehill (20-18, 6-8 NE-10 NE) returns to action Saturday afternoon at 12:00 pm when it hosts Saint Anselm College in a Northeast-10 Conference double-header. Next up for Bentley is Friday afternoon matchup with Saint Michael's College at 3:30 pm.
