Baseball Takes One of Two From Saint Rose

EASTON, Mass. (April 7, 2013) – The Stonehill College baseball team split a double-header with the Saint Rose Golden Knights in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup Sunday afternoon at Lou Gorman Field in Easton, Mass.

Freshmen Corey Burrows (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) and Chad Adams (Ware, Mass./Williston Northampton) led the way for the Golden Knights, posting two RBI each. Burrows went 1-for-5 with two RBI, while Adams went 1-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Sophomore Eric Schneider (Camarillo, Calif./St. Bonaventure) collected three RBI to pace the Skyhawk offense in game one. Junior Billy Karalis (Pawtucket, R.I./Bishop Feehan) and freshman Chris Hoyt (Walpole, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) also notched RBIs in the game.

Junior pitcher Adam DeFruscio (Schenectady, N.Y./Schenectady) secured the victory for Saint Rose in two innings of relief. DeFruscio gave up three runs on three hits and one walk, while striking out three. Bryan Carr (ALBANY, N.Y./Albany) started and earned a no-decision for the Golden Knights. Carr went 7.1 giving up three runs on eight hits and two walks. The sophomore struck out seven batters in the game.

Sophomore Ryan Rougeot (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) was tagged with the loss for the Skyhawks. Rougeot pitched three innings of relief, giving up two earned on five hits. Junior Zach Soulier (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) started and gave up five runs on nine hits and three walks but took a no-decision for Stonehill.

The Golden Knights jumped out to a four-run lead in the first inning. With the bases loaded, Lukas Nethaway (Fonda, N.Y./Fonda-Fultonville) reached on a fielder's choice to drive in the first run. Adams then doubled to drive in two more runs and Derek Reed (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) doubled to score Adams and make it 4-0.

The Skyhawks chipped away at the lead in the bottom of the first. With James DeAlto (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) on second base, Karalis hit an RBI-single to drive in DeAlto and make it 4-1.

The score remained 4-1 until Stonehill scored in the bottom of the seventh. With runners on first and second, Hoyt cut the lead to 4-2 when he singled home a run.

Saint Rose responded with two runs in the top of the eighth. With Adams on third and Reed on second with one out, Burrows hit a two-run single to make it 6-2.

With two-outs in the ninth, Stonehill knocked in three runs to tie the game. Karalis started it when he hit an RBI-double. After Dan Fratus (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) walked, Schneider tied it up with a two-run double.

The Golden Knights ended up scoring the game-winning run in the top of the tenth. With Reed on third and one out, Capone successfully completed a suicide squeeze to drive in Reed for the winning run.

Stonehill 6, Saint Rose 4

Karalis posted a two-RBI performance in game two to pilot the Skyhawk offense. Fratus and Schneider also collected RBIs for the Skyhawks, who managed eight hits in the win.

Leading the way for the Golden Knights in game two was Scott Hladik (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga). Hladik went 2-for-4 with two RBI in game two. Seniors Kyle Charron (Schaghticoke, N.Y./La Salle Institute) and Caleb Gleason (Watervliet, N.Y./Watervliet) also earned RBIs for the Golden Knights.

Sophomore Steve Pike (Stoughton, Mass./Catholic Memorial) earned his second win of the season in one inning of relief for Stonehill. Pike held the Golden Knights scoreless, giving up just one hit in the appearance. Junior Armand Rugel (Middletown, R.I./Middletown) recorded a hitless ninth to collect his fourth save of the season for the Skyhawks.

The Skyhawks opened the scoring with two runs in the second inning. After a Fratus single to open the inning, Brian Campbell (Franklin, Mass./Mount Saint Charles) hit an RBI-triple to drive in the game's first run. Anthony Pagano (Cranston, R.I./Cranston West) made it 2-0 when he drove home Campbell with a sacrifice fly to center field.

Saint Rose fought back with three runs in the top of the third. With runners on first and second, Gleason hit a RBI-single to make it 2-1. Two batters later, Hladik gave Saint Rose the lead when he hit a two-run single.

The Skyhawks regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the third. After Chris Hoyt and James DeAlto reached base, Karalis drove them in with a two-run single, making it 4-3.

The Golden Knights tied the game in the top of the fifth. Joseph Carcone (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford) hit a leadoff double and advanced to third on a groundout. Carcone scored later in the inning on a Charron groundout to second base.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the eighth. Karalis reached base on a single, making way for Fratus' RBI triple to left center field. Schneider added an insurance run when he singled up the middle, making it 6-4.

Rugel shut down the Golden Knights in the ninth with a 1-2-3 inning to seal the win for the Skyhawks.

Stonehill (17-11, 5-5 NE-10) continues NE-10 divisional play Wednesday afternoon when it hosts Bentley University at 3:30 pm. Next up for Saint Rose (5-26, 2-8 NE-10) is a matchup with Assumption College at 3:30.
