Stonehill and Lowell Suspend Play in the 15th, Tied at 4-4

Game suspended after the 15th due to darkness.

EASTON, Mass. (April 2, 2013) – The Stonehill College baseball team and the UMass Lowell River Hawks halted play in the 15-inning of a NE-10 divisional matchup Tuesday afternoon at Lou Gorman Field in Easton, Mass. The game was suspended after the 15th inning due to darkness, it will resume play at a date and time to be announced.

Freshman Neal Horan (Mashpee, Mass./BC High) started for Stonehill and earned a no-decision. The righty yielded three unearned runs on three hits and one walk, while striking out one. Junior Armand Rugel (Middletown, R.I./Middletown) pitched six innings of relief, giving up one earned run on four hits and three walks. Rugel struck out five batters in the appearance. Freshman Mike Krupczak (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) closed out the game for the Skyhawks, going three scoreless hitless innings.

Christian Lavoie (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) got the start for the River Hawks. Lavoie went eight innings, giving up two earned runs on eight hits and two walks. The sophomore earned six strikeouts in the outing. Redshirt senior Mike Sloban (Merrimac, Mass./Pentucket Regional) went four innings of relief for the River Hawks. Sloban struck out two batters but gave up two runs in the ninth to let Stonehill tie the game. Sophomore Geoff Fisher (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) pitched the final three innings for Lowell, holding the Skyhawks scoreless and giving up just three hits.

The Skyhawks got the scoring started in the bottom of the fifth inning. Freshman Brian Campbell (Franklin, Mass./Mount Saint Charles) led off the inning with a single and stole second base. Chris Callahan (Southington, Conn./Holy Cross High) knocked in Campbell with an RBI-single, two batters later.

The River Hawks responded in the top of the sixth to take a 3-1 advantage. With runners on first and second, James Katsiroubas (Milton, Mass./Milton) reached on an error by the third baseman, Matthew Sanchez (Surnrise, Fla./Nova) came around to score on the play. The next batter, Jimmy Ricoy (Lowell, Mass./Lowell), put the River Hawks up when he hit a two-RBI triple to right field.

Stonehill chipped away at the lead in the bottom of the sixth. After James DeAlto (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) hit a lead-off double, Dan Fratus (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) knocked him in when he singled through the right side.

The River Hawks added a run in the ninth to make it 4-2. After Pat Devlin (Tewksbury, Mass./Tewksbury) walked and advanced to third following a sacrifice bunt and a single, Sanchez drove him in with a sacrifice fly.

The Skyhawks registered two runs in the ninth to tie send it to extra innings. Sophomore Christian Baglini (Milford, Conn./Notre Dame High) hit a pinch-hit single through the left side to lead off the inning. The next batter, pinch-hitter Eric Schneider (Camarillo, Calif./St. Bonaventure), cut the lead in half when he hit an RBI-double to left-center field. Two batters later, with Schneider on third, DeAlto tied the score with a sacrifice fly to left field.

The teams played six scoreless innings of extra baseball before the game was suspended after the 15th.

Stonehill (15-9, 3-1 NE-10 NE) returns to action Saturday afternoon when it hosts Le Moyne College for a NE-10 matchup beginning at 12:00 pm. Next up for the River Hawks (14-9, 0-3 NE-10 NE).
