Stonehill Splits With Saint Anselm and Rollins, 13-7 and 13-2

Winter Park, Fla. (March 4, 2013) – The Stonehill College baseball team split a double-header with Saint Anselm College and Rollins College Monday evening at Alfond Stadium on the campus of Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla.

Stonehill 13, Saint Anselm 7

Six different Skyhawks register RBIs as Stonehill cruises past the Hawks.

Stonehill was led by sophomore Christian Baglini (Milford, Conn./Notre Dame High), who reached base four times, going 3-3 and knocking in three RBIs. Junior Anthony Pagano (Cranston, R.I./Cranston West) and Billy Karalis (Pawtucket, R.I./Bishop Feehan) also had a big games for the Skyhawks,  driving in two runs each.

Sophomore Neal Horan (Mashpee, Mass./BC High) went seven innings and earned the win for Stonehill.  Horan gave up seven hits, three walks and three runs (two earned), while striking out seven. Baglini pitched a scoreless seventh, holding the Hawks without a hit in the inning. Chris Callahan (Southington, Conn./Holy Cross High) gave up four runs in the ninth inning, but closed the door for Stonehill, which captured its seventh win of the season in the victory.

Seve Llanio (Glen Arm, Md./Gilman School/Univ. of Delaware) was charged with the loss for Saint Anselm. Llanio gave up six runs (four earned) on six hits and six walks in 3.1 innings. William O'Connor (Worcester, Mass./St. John's) was tagged for seven earned runs on five hits and three walks.

The Skyhawks scored two runs in the first inning to take an early lead. After James DeAlto (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) reached on a fielder's choice and Karalis walked, Pagano brought them in with a two-RBI double down the right field line.

Saint Anselm got one back in the bottom of the second when Joe Morin (Salem, N.H./Salem) doubled in Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) after Lagasse reached on an error by the second baseman.

Stonehill extended the lead to 4-1 in the third. Pagano and Michael Zeiner (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) each earned two-out walks to make it first and second for Brian Campbell (Franklin, Mass./Mount Saint Charles). Campbell brought in Pagano and Zeiner when he hit a double down the right field line.

After two more runs in the fourth, Stonehill would make it 10-1 in the fifth. With runners on first and second, Callahan roped a single through the right side, scoring Campbell. Baglini followed that with a sacrifice fly to score Matt Anziano (Belchertown, Mass./Belchertown). After DeAlto walked, Karalis brought in Callahan and DeAlto with a two-RBI double.

With the score 13-3 in the ninth, the Hawks launched a comeback bid. With the bases loaded and one out, Mike Hayden (Cranston, R.I./Cranston West) singled home Tom Murphy (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) to make it 13-4. Lagasse then walked in a run before Bobby Carkhuff (Amherst, Mass./Amherst) singled home another. Morin recorded a sacrifice fly to left field to make it 13-7 and then Callahan closed the door, getting Jack Hopkins (Brandywine, Md./Bishop McNamara) to fly out to left to end the game.

Rollins 13, Stonehill 2

Fast start and Curson's big day propels Rollins past the Skyhawks.

Senior Brandon Curson (Woodstock, Ga./Etowah/Young Harris) led the charge for Rollins, collecting four RBIs on the night. Brian Lattanzi (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair/Buffalo) and Zach Persky (Solon, Ohio/University School) each chipped in with two RBIs for the Tars, who move to 8-6 with the win.

Brandon Burgess (Plantation, Fla./Chaminade-Madonna Prep) pitched six innings, holding the Skyhawks to one run on two hits and one walk, while striking out seven. Freshman Philip Tahernia (Melbourne, Fla./Melbourne Central Catholics) went the final three innings for the Tars, giving up one run on two hits and striking out two.

Patrick Nicholson (Middleboro, Mass./Middleboro) took the loss for Stonehill, going six innings and giving up ten runs (nine earned) on eight hits and five walks. Ryan Rougeot (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) pitched a scoreless inning of relief, holding the Tars scoreless and hitless in the seventh inning.

Curson helped the Tars take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. With two men on and two outs, he launched a double, scoring Persky and Lattanzi. After the Tars went up 3-0 in the third on a wild pitch, Curson was back at it in the fourth. With a man on, the Rollins right fielder blasted his third home run of the season to put the Tars up 5-0.

Lettanzi and Persky would add to the lead in the top of the fourth. With men on first and second, the Tars' first baseman drove in the seventh run of the game with an RBI single. Persky followed suit when he hit a two-RBI single three pitches later to give the Tars a 9-0 lead.

Stonehill scored its runs in the fourth and seventh innings. With DeAlto on third and two outs in the fourth, Eric Schneider (Camarillo, Calif./St. Bonaventure) earned his second RBI of the season when he hit an RBI single, scoring DeAlto. Anziano would get his third RBI of the year in the seventh when he reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Pagano.

Next up for the Skyhawks (7-2, 0-0 NE-10) is an 11:00 am matchup with Felician College tomorrow. Saint Anselm (2-4-1, 0-0 NE-10) and Rollins (8-6, 0-0 SSC) square off tomorrow in a non-conference battle at 6:00 pm.
