Stonehill Shuts Out Assumption, 9-0

Fratus knocks in three runs as the Skyhawks blank the Greyhounds

Winter Park, Fla. (March 3, 2013) – The Stonehill College baseball team defeated Assumption College,  9-0 in a non-conference matchup Sunday night on the campus of Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla.

Junior Zach Soulier (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) pitched a complete game shutout to earn the win for Stonehill. Soulier gave up five hits and two walks, but struck out six batters in his second win of the season.

Sophomore Zach LaRosa (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) was charged with the loss for Assumption. LaRosa pitched five and two-thirds innings, giving up eight runs (six earned) on six hits and five walks. Anthony Perry (Salem, Mass./St. John's) pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the Greyhounds, who fall to 0-3 on the year.

Stonehill scored the first run of the game in the opening stanza. Christian Baglini (Milford, Conn./Notre Dame High School) hit a lead-off single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Baglini scored two batters later when Dan Fratus (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) reached on an error by the third baseman.

The Skyhawks extended their lead in the third inning when Fratus hit a two-RBI single down the right field line. Baglini and James DeAlto (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) scored on the single, making it 3-0. Later in the inning, Anthony Pagano (Cranston, R.I./Cranston West) reached on an error by the center fielder, scoring Fratus and making it 4-0 Skyhawks.

Stonehill opened the lead to 9-0 in the sixth. Following a single by Michael Zeiner (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) and walks by  Chris Callahan (Southington, Conn./Holy Cross High) and Brian Campbell (Franklin, Mass./Mount Saint Charles), Baglini earned an RBI when he walked in a run. DeAlto extended the lead to 7-0 when he hit a two-RBI single to left field. Fratus followed, driving in his third run of the game when he singled in Baglini. Pagano capped off the scoring when he earned a bases-loaded walk to drive in his fifth run of the season.

Next up for Stonehill (6-1, 0-0 NE-10) is a double-header against Saint Anselm College and Rollins College tomorrow, starting at 3:00 pm. Assumption (0-3, 0-0 NE-10) will face Felician College tomorrow morning at 11:00 am.
