Stonehill Walks Off With Win Over Molloy, 4-3

Matt Anziano hits walk-of RBI single to push Stonehill past Molloy

MYRTLE BEACH, Mass. (February 24, 2013) – The Stonehill College Skyhawks baseball team earned a 4-3 walk-off victory over the Molloy College Lions Saturday afternoon at the Ripken Experience Northeast Challenge in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Armand Rugel (Middletown, R.I/Middletown) pitched one and one-third innings of relief and earned the win for the Skyhawks, who improve to 3-1 on the season. Rugel retired four of the five batters he faced, giving up one hit and striking out one batter. The junior pitcher now has one win and two saves on the year.

Neal Horan (Mashpee, Mass./BC High) started for the Skyhawks and pitched five innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits and four walks. Horan recorded four strikeouts in his second appearance of the season. Ryan Rougeot (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) relieved Horan, going three and two-thirds innings and giving up one run on two hits.

Patrick Brown (Howard Beach, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) was tabbed with the loss for Molloy who falls to 1-5 on the season. Brown pitched an inning and one-third for the Lions, giving up one earned run on two hits and two walks. Alex Miden (Ozone Park, N.Y./Nassau C.C) started the game and went eight and one-third innings, surrendering three runs (two earned) on seven hits and three walks for Molloy.

Stonehill jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning. Billy Karalis (Pawtucket, R.I./Bishop Feehan) hit a sacrifice fly to right field bringing home Christian Baglini (Milford, Conn./Notre Dame High) for the first run of the game.

Molloy tied the game at 1-1 in the third inning. John Galanoudis (Farmigdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) doubled to center field; he advanced to third when Erik Pyle (Atlantic Beach, N.Y./Kellenberg) grounded out. Galanoudis scored on a passed ball to make it 1-1. The Lions added to their lead in the fifth when Robert Inzerillo (Valley Stream, N.Y./Stony Brook) recorded an RBI single to make it 2-1. Greg Walsh (Bellmore, N.Y./Holy Trinity) knocked in another run in the sixth when he hit an RBI single of his own, making it 3-1 Molloy.

The Skyhawks scored two in the sixth to knot the game at three. Dan Fratus (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) hit a sacrifice to right field to bring in James DeAlto (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff). Karalis later scored on a wild pitch to tie the game 3-3.

The score remained tied until the 10th inning; Karalis started it off with a leadoff walk. After two straight outs, Zeiner singled and advanced Karalis to second. Matt Anziano (Belchertown, Mass./Belchertown) then hit the walk-off RBI single, scoring Karalis and ending the game.

Next up for Stonehill (3-1) is a Sunday matchup with Mercyhurst College at 1:30 pm. Molloy College (1-5) will take on Chestnut Hill College and Felician College tomorrow afternoon.
