Lisbon, N.H. native strikes out two hitters in one inning, goes 1-for-2 at the plate
EASTON, Mass. (June 12, 2012) – Stonehill College senior pitcher/utility player Michael White (Lisbon, N.H./Lisbon Regional) participated in the 38th annual New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) All-Star Game at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton, Mass., last night. White was a reserve pitcher/utility player for the College Division (NCAA Division II & III) All-Stars that dropped a 5-3 decision to the University Division (NCAA Division I) All-Stars.
White entered the game in the fifth inning after Brad Monroe (Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) of Southern New Hampshire University and Tyler Erickson (Naugatuck, Conn./Holy Cross HS) of Castleton State College both tossed a pair of scoreless innings. White induced Alex Maldonado (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) from Holy Cross into a groundout back to himself for the first out, struck out Kevin Carlow (Mystic, Conn./Brown University) looking on a 3-2 fastball and fanned Sean Furney (Warwick, R.I./University of Rhode Island) to end the frame.
White, who made his third-straight appearance at the NEIBA All-Star Game, took the field in the next inning as the team's first baseman. At the plate, White struck out swinging in his first at-bat but bounced back with a double and a walk in his next two plate appearances to end the night with a 1-for-2 showing.
The College Division held a 1-0 lead until the sixth inning when eventual NEIBA All-Star Game Offensive Most Valuable Player Steve Tkowski (Bourne, Mass./Bourne) from Holy Cross lined a three-run homer just over the left field fence for a 3-1 advantage. The University Division tacked on a run in the seventh on a RBI double by Northeastern University second baseman Jason Vosler (West Nyack, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep) and added another run in the ninth as J.P. Sportman (Schenectady, N.Y./LaSalle HS) from Central Connecticut notched a single down the left field line scoring Carlow for a 5-1 gap.
In the bottom of the ninth, the College Division made it 5-2 as Rhode Island College senior shortstop Kyle Allaire (Uxbridge, Mass./Uxbridge) scored on a wild pitch and UMass Lowell's Cam Kneeland (Rowley, Mass./Triton Regional) cut the deficit to 5-3 with a run producing single to right field. The College Division's rally fell short as Kneeland was caught stealing at third base to end the contest.
White played in all 49 games for Stonehill in 2012 making 31 starts at first, nine at designated hitter, seven in left field, two in center field and nine starts as a pitcher (ten appearances). At the plate, White compiled a .307 batting average (62-for-202) with 42 runs scored, 13 doubles, three triples, three homers, 31 runs batted in, a .353 on-base percentage, a .436 slugging percentage, went 11-for-13 in stolen base attempts and posted a .978 fielding percentage in 370 chances (327 putouts, 35 assists and eighth errors). White reached base safely in 38 out of his 49 games played via a hit, walk or a hit-by-pitch. White also put together the longest hitting streak on the team ranging 19-straight games from March 16 to April 15 where he collected 33 hits total and 18 RBI's. White collected the most multi-hit games on the team with 22 total compiling 17 two-hit contests and five three-hit games. White ranked second on the club in multi-RBI games recording seven total. He had three two-RBI games and a pair of three and four multi-RBI contests, respectively.
On the mound, White posted a 4-2 record overall to go along with a 2.03 earned run average (ERA), two shutouts, one combined shutout and one save in 62 innings pitched. He struck out 46 batters and held opponents to a .229 batting average in 236 at-bats. White currently ranks in the top-15 in the NE-10 in complete games (three) and shutouts. White average 6.68 strikeouts per game and recorded a 3.3 strikeouts-to-walks ratio. In his last 19-and-one-thirds innings pitched to close out his senior season, White did not allow a run dating back to April 15 against Southern New Hampshire University. He also struck out five or more batters in four appearances including a season-high 11 strikeouts versus Post University on February 25 in a 4-3 win.
White wrapped up his senior season as a consensus All-Region player earning honors from the American Baseball Coaches' Association (ABCA), Daktronics and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
Stonehill posted a 30-19 record overall, 18-11 mark in the Northeast-10 (NE-10) Conference and a 13-8 showing in Northeast Divisional play. The Skyhawks went 7-3 overall in their last ten regular season contests to earn their third-straight trip to the NE-10 Tournament. Stonehill fell to Franklin Pierce University, 6-0, in the opening round of the tournament, on the road.
