Bentley Tops Stonehill, 12-4

EASTON, Mass. (April 17, 2012) – Stonehill College, ranked fourth overall in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) East Regional Poll, fell to Bentley University, 12-4, in Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) Northeast Division action on Tuesday afternoon at Lou Gorman Field.

Junior right-hander JP Ashline (Clinton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough Regional) earned the win in a complete-game effort yielding seven hits, four runs (all earned), no walks and six strikeouts.

Senior Bryan Galligan (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) was handed the loss on four-plus innings of work, eight hits, five runs (all earned), no walks and five punchouts.

Bentley took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning as sophomore shortstop Will Brennan (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust Valley) led off the frame with a double to right center and scored on a RBI triple by Nate Witkowski (Melrose, Mass./Malden Catholic/Avon Old Farms). After a pop out from Sean Keady (Norwood, Mass./Norwood), Mike Muir (Bridgewater, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield for the second run of the inning.

Senior designated hitter Greg Baggett (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater) crushed a two-run homer to left field in the fourth to make it 4-0 plating Kevin Korwek (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) who singled down the left field line to get on base.
In the fifth, Bentley scored a pair of runs on a RBI single up the middle from junior second baseman Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./Lawrence Academy) and a throwing error.

Stonehill cut into the gap, 6-2, in the bottom half of the frame with run-producing singles through the right side of the infield from Billy Horobin (Wallingford, Conn./Mark T. Sheehan) and junior shortstop Michael Zeiner (Simbury, Conn./Simsbury).

The Falcons went on to outscore the Skyhawks 6-2 over the next four innings of play to secure their first victory over Stonehill this season (1-3 overall). Sophomore second baseman Dan Fratus (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) slugged a two-run homer to right center in the eighth for the Skyhawks only runs.

Senior first baseman Michael White (Lisbon, N.H./Lisbon Regional) had his 19-game hitting streak snapped going 0-for-4 with one run scored on Fratus' longball in the eighth. White's hitting streak, the longest on the team this season, began on March 13. White compiled 13 multi-hit games during that span.

Stonehill (23-13, 11-7 NE-10, 6-4 Northeast Division) hosts no.29-ranked Franklin Pierce University in NE-10 doubleheader action on Saturday, April 21 with game one scheduled for noon. Stonehill head coach Patrick Boen (Stonehill, '89, 15th season) remains one win shy of 400 in his career (399-286-2). Bentley (19-18, 11-7 NE-10, 4-6 Northeast Division) welcomes Tufts University to Robert DeFelice Field on Thursday, April 19 for a single non-conference game beginning at 3:30 p.m.
