Stonehill Doubles Up Bentley, 4-2

Soulier gives up two runs (one earned) over six innings to improve to 4-0 overall

Sophomore Zach Soulier improved to
4-0 on the season in today's win over
Bentley University.

EASTON, Mass. (April 3, 2012) – Stonehill College, ranked fourth overall in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) East Regional Poll, earned a 4-2 victory over Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) Northeast Division action on Tuesday afternoon at Lou Gorman Field.

Sophomore left-handed pitcher Zach Soulier (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) picked up his fourth triumph of the season (4-0) on six-and-one-thirds innings pitched, six hits, two runs (one earned), no walks and four strikeouts. Senior Michael White (Lisbon, N.H./Lisbon Regional) notched his second career save closing out the final two-and-two-thirds innings, yielding one hit, no runs, no walks and three strikeouts.

Junior J.P. Ashline (Clinton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough Reg.) suffered the loss on eight innings pitched, five hits, four runs (all earned), four walks and two strikeouts.

Stonehill took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as White drove in junior centerfielder James DeAlto (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) with a double to left center, sophomore second baseman Dan Fratus (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) extended his hitting streak to 18-straight games with a run-producing triple to right field and sophomore Billy Karalis (Pawtucket, R.I./Bishop Feehan) capped the scoring with a RBI groundout to second base.

Bentley cut into the deficit at 3-1 in the top of the third inning on a two-out RBI double by sophomore left fielder Sean Keady (Norwood, Mass./Norwood). Sophomore third baseman Nate Witkowski (Melrose, Mass./Malden Catholic/Avon Old Farms) scored on the play after keeping the inning alive with an infield single to the pitcher.

In the fourth inning, the Falcons made it a one-run contest, 3-2, taking advantage of a Skyhawks fielding miscue. Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./Lawrence Academy) led off the frame and advanced to second on a two-base throwing error, stole third and was eventually driven in on a RBI groundout from senior Kevin Korwek (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) to second base.

Bentley threatened in the sixth inning with runners on second and third with one out, but Soulier induced a 3-5-2 double play to end the frame. Stonehill answered with an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning as freshman third baseman Dan Pidgeon (Darien, Conn./Darien) plated Karalis with a sacrifice fly to centerfield to make it 4-2.

Soulier and White combined to give up one hit over the next three innings and did not allow a runner to advance into scoring position to wrap up Stonehill's fifth-straight win.

Karalis and White picked up the Skyhawks only multi-hit games on the afternoon posting identical 2-for-4 lines with one run scored and one run batted in.

Stonehill (19-9, 7-3 NE-10, 4-1 Northeast Division) hosts Assumption tomorrow in a NE-10 contest beginning at 3:30 p.m. Bentley (14-14, 6-3 NE-10, 2-3 Northeast Division) plays host to American International College on Saturday, April 7 for a doubleheader with game one scheduled for noon.
