Rugel Named NE-10 Rookie of the Week

Skyhawks right-hander earned first-career win in first-career appearance

EASTON, Mass. (February 28, 2012) – Stonehill College freshman right-handed pitcher Armand Rugel (Middletown, R.I./Middletown) has been named the Rookie of the Week by the Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10), it was announced earlier today.

In his only appearance for the Skyhawks in Myrtle Beach, S.C. this past weekend, Rugel earned his first career win after tossing four shutout innings of relief against Post University while yielding just one hit, one walk and five punchouts in a 4-3 comeback win.

The freshman pitcher comes to Stonehill after a standout career at Middletown High School where he earned three RIBCA All-Star selections, Rhode Island All-State honors, two All-Division and two Newport County accolades. Rugel was also named the Newport County Player of the Year and captained his team in his senior season.

Stonehill posted a 4-1 record overall to open up its season in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Skyhawks swept a doubleheader against Post University, defeated Concordia (N.Y.), 8-2, and split a doubleheader against Felician College.

Stonehill returns to action on Saturday, March 3 against Molloy College in doubleheader action at Joe Nathan Field in Stony Brook, N.Y. with game one scheduled for noon. The Skyhawks first home game of the season is scheduled for Thursday, March 29 against Assumption College at 3:30 p.m.
