Saint Anselm Edges Stonehill, 2-1

Kelly posts complete game win on the mound to lead Hawks

MANCHESTER, N.H. (April 29, 2011) – Saint Anselm College edged Stonehill College, ranked sixth in this week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II East Regional poll, 2-1 in Northeast-10 Conference baseball action at Sullivan Park this afternoon.

Sophomore righthander Robert Kelly (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) went the distance on the mound to pick up the win (6-2) for Saint Anselm. He allowed just the one earned run on seven hits with eight strikeouts and three walks over nine innings. Kelly also helped the cause at the plate by hitting 2-for-3 with a double.

Senior Matt Sucharewicz (Peabody, Mass./Peabody) went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and RBI. Freshman Tito Lluberes (Lawrence, Mass./Lawrence) hit 1-for-4 with a run scored.

Junior Michael Magnussen (Carver, Mass./Carver) led the way for Stonehill as he hit 2-for-3 with a double and home run. Classmate Rich McHugh (Pembroke, Mass./Thayer Academy) went 2-for-4, while senior Nick Nardacci (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) batted 1-for-4 with a double.

Junior lefthander Eric Haughn (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) took the loss (5-3) on the mound for the Skyhawks, yielding two earned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and five walks over 6.1 innings.

Stonehill struck first when Magnussen led off the second inning with his first collegiate home run. Saint Anselm tied the game up in the third as senior James Garrigan (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) drew a two out walk, advanced to third on a single by Kelly, and scored on a single to right center by Sucharewicz.

Saint Anselm took the lead in the seventh when Lluberes led off with a single and scored when junior Daniel DeCoste (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) reached on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded. Stonehill had a go-ahead run of its own taken away when sophomore Michael Zeiner (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) was cut down at the plate on a double by Nardacci in the seventh.

Stonehill (28-13, 11-8 NE-10) is right back in action on Saturday when it visits the University of New Haven for a key NE-10 doubleheader at noon. The Skyhawks return home next Friday, May 6, to host The College of Saint Rose to makeup a rained out doubleheader Easter weekend that was originally rescheduled for May 2 at 1 p.m. Saint Anselm (20-20, 10-11 NE-10) visits Assumption College on Saturday for a doubleheader at noon.
