Thompson pitches three hit shutout to lead Ravens to key win

EASTON, Mass. (April 20, 2011) – Franklin Pierce University, ranked 14th in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II poll and 16th in the Collegiate Baseball magazine coaches' poll, posted a 3-0 victory over Stonehill, among teams receiving votes in the NCBWA poll and ranked fourth in the East Region, in Northeast-10 Conference baseball action at Lou Gorman Field this afternoon.

Sophomore righthander Ryan Thompson (Calgary, Alberta) tossed a shutout to lead Franklin Pierce to victory (8-1), scattering three hits and two walks over his nine innings with 13 strikeouts. He retired the last 15 batters he faced and allowed just one hit after the first inning.

Junior Dan Hennigan (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) paced the Franklin Pierce offense as he hit 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored. Senior Derek Ingui (Sterling, Mass./Wachusett Regional) went 1-for-3 with an RBI and stolen base, while junior Mike Dowd (East Bridgewater, Mass./Cardinal Spellman) finished 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Junior lefthander Eric Haughn (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) took the loss (5-2) on the mound for Stonehill, snapping a string of five straight winning decisions, as he allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits with two strikeouts and four walks over seven innings.

Sophomore Michael Zeiner (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) hit 1-for-3 at the plate for Stonehill. Senior Angelo Bruno (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) and junior Michael White (Lisbon, N.H./Lisbon Regional) both finished 1-for-4.

After Stonehill collected two of its three hits on the afternoon in the first inning, stranding both, Franklin Pierce broke through in the second with a run. Junior Isaac Wenrich (Westlawn, Pa./Wilson) drew a leadoff walk, was sacrificed to second and reached third on a fly out, before scoring on a single through the left side by Hennigan.

Franklin Pierce added a run in the fifth as senior Mike Munoz (Bronx, N.Y./Lehman) reached on an error, stole second and scored on a two out single to right by Ingui. The Ravens added a third in the seventh when Hennigan drew a one out walk, advanced to second on a ground out and then scored all the way from second when he was off on contact with two out on an infield single in the hole at short by Dowd.

Stonehill (25-12, 10-7 NE-10) is scheduled to return to action on Saturday for an NE-10 doubleheader with The College of Saint Rose at noon. Franklin Pierce (30-7, 16-3 NE-10) hosts Saint Michael's College for a non-conference doubleheader tomorrow at 4 p.m.
