Adelphi Sweeps Stonehill

Panthers shut out Skyhawks 5-0 in game one, hold on for 4-3 win in game two

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (March 26, 2011) – Adelphi University swept a doubleheader from Stonehill College, ranked fifth in this week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II East Regional poll, in Northeast-10 Conference baseball action at William J. Bonomo Field this afternoon.

Sophomore Michael Zeiner (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) helped pace the Stonehill offense as he hit a combined 3-for-6 with an RBI and run scored for the two games. Senior Nick Nardacci (Bethlehem, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) was 3-for-8 with a double and run scored, while classmate Angelo Bruno (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) finished a combined 3-for-9 with a double and RBI.

Adelphi 5, Stonehill 0

Senior righthander Robert Nixon (Welland, Ontario/Notre Dame) fired a two-hit shutout on the mound to lead Adelphi to a 5-0 win in game one.

Nixon scattered the two hits with 11 strikeouts and three walks over his nine innings of work to earn the win (2-1) on the mound for Adelphi. Freshman Richard Mejia (Jackson, N.J./Perkiomen School) paced the Panthers offense as he hit 3-for-4 with an RBI.           

Junior Michael White (Lisbon, N.H./Lisbon Regional) finished 1-for-3 with a walk for Stonehill at the plate, while Nick Nardacci finished 1-for-3. Senior Alex McCormick (Weymouth, Mass./Cardinal Spellman) took the loss (2-2) on the mound for the Skyhawks as he allowed four runs, two earned, on eight hits with five strikeouts and one walk over seven innings.

Adelphi opened the scoring with single runs in the first and second. Grad student Omar Velazquez (Astoria, N.Y./Long Island City) led off with a single and later scored on a Stonehill throwing error at third on a stolen base attempt. Sophomore Anthony Zarrella (Holbrook, N.Y./John the Baptist) led off the second with a single and later scored on a sacrifice bunt.

Adelphi added two more in the fifth inning as senior Richard McCarren (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) delivered an RBI double and later scored on a single to center by junior Justin Farnum (Glendale, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy). The Panthers closed out the scoring in the eight with an RBI single by Mejia.


Senior Angelo Bruno delivered three hits, including a double, and an RBI in game two. 
Adelphi 4, Stonehill 3

Adelphi held off a ninth inning rally to claim a 4-3 victory over Stonehill in game two. The Panthers scored all four runs over their final three at bats, and stranded the game-tying run on second base seal the victory.

Junior Lucas Romeo (Queens, N.Y./Saint Francis Prep) paced the Adelphi offense as he hit 1-for-3 with a double, RBI and run scored, while senior Trevor Thorstensen (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) batted 1-for-3 with a double and RBI.

Senior lefthander Mike Scudero (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) earned the win (2-1) as he allowed an earned run on six hits with eight strikeouts and two walks over seven innings. Sophomore Jimmy Milani (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) picked up his first save by working around a hit and recording the final out of the contest.

Mike Zeiner was 3-for-4 in game two for Stonehill with an RBI and run scored. Angelo Bruno hit 3-for-5 with a double and RBI, while Nick Nardacci finished 2-for-5 with a run scored.

Senior Bryan Galligan (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) took the loss (2-1) for Stonehill, allowing three earned runs on five hits with six strikeouts and no walks over seven innings. He yielded just two hits over the first five innings, retiring the first six batters and facing two over the minimum through five. Galligan struck out the side in order in the fifth before the Panthers finally broke through in the sixth.

Stonehill struck first, opening the scoring in the second as freshman William Karalis (Pawtucket, R.I./Bishop Feehan) doubled with two out and scored on a single to left by Zeiner. Adelphi knotted the score in the sixth as Omar Velazquez reached on an infield single with one out, advancing to second on a throwing error on the play. He stole third and then scored on a ground out by Richard McCarren.

Adelphi took the lead with a two-run seventh. Romeo delivered an RBI double and then scored when Thorstensen followed with a double to left. The Panthers added an insurance run in the eighth as junior Craig Matteo (Herricks, N.Y./St. Mary's) led off with a single and came around to score with the help of a passed ball and two wild pitches.

Stonehill tried to rally in the ninth as Michael White had an RBI single to extend his team-leading hitting streak to ten games and Bruno also notched an RBI single to greet Milani before he retired the next batter to strand the tying run on second.  

Stonehill (14-7, 0-0 NE-10) is right back in action tomorrow when it hosts Merrimack College for an NE-10 clash at 1 p.m. Adelphi (12-7-1, 2-2 NE-10) visits Assumption College tomorrow at 1 p.m.
