Lisbon, N.H., native earns award for first time after collecting Pitcher of the Week accolades earlier this season

EASTON, Mass. (March 22, 2011) – Stonehill College junior outfielder/left-handed pitcher Michael White (Lisbon, N.H./Lisbon Regional) has been named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) DIvision II East Region and Northeast-10 Conference's Player of the Week after starring for the Skyhawks at the plate and on the mound.

White, who was named NWBCA East Region and NE-10 Pitcher of the Week earlier this season, has been named both Player of the Week honors for the first time in his career after leading Stonehill to a 4-3 week at the plate and on the mound. He hit .481 (13-for-27) with seven runs scored, two doubles, two RBI and eight stolen bases (on as many attempts) over the four games, posting a .556 slugging and .563 on-base percentage for the week. White also made two starts on the mound and went 1-0 with a 0.66 earned run average and 12 strikeouts over 13.2 innings, holding opposing batters to a .226 average.

White went 2-for-5 with two steals and two runs scored in support of his winning decision on the mound against Pace on Saturday, allowing just an unearned run on five hits with nine strikeouts over 7.2 innings. He was 4-for-5 with a double, stolen base and two runs scored against the University of Bridgeport on Wednesday and then batted 3-for-4 with three steals and an RBI in Saturday's win over Bentley University. White didn't earn a decision against the Falcons on Monday, allowing an earned run on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks over six innings.

White, named to the Tino Martinez Division II Player of the Year Preseason "Watch List", leads Stonehill at both the plate and on the mound through the first 16 games of the season. He is hitting a team-best .367 (22-for-60) with 14 runs scored, three doubles, a home run, three RBI and is a perfect 14-for-14 on stolen base attempts. He has reached base 6-of-12 (50%) opportunities when leading off an inning and shares the team lead with seven multiple hit games this season, having hit safely in five straight games. White has also made three starts on the mound and is 2-0 with a 0.42 ERA, 22 strikeouts and just four walks over 21.2 innings, holding opposing batters to a .169 batting average. He is averaging 7.22 innings per start, allowing just 0.79 walks and hits per innings pitched (WHIP).

White is coming off a breakout sophomore season in which he emerged as one of the dominant lefthanders in the region. He earned third team All-Northeast-10 Conference honors at utility and was named to the NEIBA All-Star Game at Fenway Park, having starred for the Skyhawks on the mound, at the plate and in the outfield. He earned All-Tournament team honors at the NCAA East Regional after firing a two-hit shutout in the Skyhawks NCAA Tournament opener against the University of New Haven, striking out seven and walking just one. In Stonehill's late season 12-game winning streak, White made three starts and was 3-0 with a 0.74 ERA, 19 strikeouts and four walks over 24.1 innings.

White, a consensus All-East Region performer for the Stonehill men's soccer team this past fall, has played 65 games in his three seasons for the baseball team (56 starts) and is hitting .319 (68-213) with 27 runs scored, eight doubles, two home runs and 23 RBI with 27 steals. He has also made 19 career appearances (14 starts) on the mound, posting an 8-3 record and 2.54 ERA with 82 strikeouts and 19 walks in 110 innings pitched. White has allowed just three earned runs over his last 46 innings of work in his last six starts dating back to last season (0.59 ERA).

White led the Northeast-10 Conference with nine goals and 22 points during the soccer season this past fall, earning All-Conference second team honors and helping the Skyhawks qualify for their first postseason appearance since 1999.

Stonehill (11-5, 0-0 NE-10), ranked fifth in this week's NCBWA Division II East Regional poll, is back in action tomorrow when it visits Assumption College for a non-conference clash at 3:30 p.m. The Skyhawks first home games are a scheduled non-conference doubleheader with Post University on Friday, starting at 1 p.m.
