Rollins Rolls Past Stonehill, 21-4

Three big innings the difference as Tars hand Skyhawks second-straight loss

WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 15, 2011) – Rollins College used three big innings to fuel a 21-4 victory over Stonehill College, ranked fourth in this week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) East Regional poll, in a non-conference baseball matchup at Alfond Stadium tonight.

Junior Nick Adams (Orlando, Fla./Winter Park) paced Rollins 22-hit attack as he went 5-for-6 with a pair of doubles, three runs scored and four RBI. Junior Brian Lattanzi (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) was 3-for-6 with an RBI and two runs scored, while senior Max Pavey (North Fort Myers, Fla./North Fort Myers) hit 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Junior Kevin Mager (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) batted 2-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and four RBI.

Junior righthander Garrett Yount (Silvis, Ill./United Township) picked up the win on the mound for the Tars (5-1), allowing two earned runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and three walks over five innings.

Sophomore Ricky Travers (Norton, Mass./Norton) led Stonehill as he hit 2-for-3 with two RBI, while classmate James DeAlto (Briarcliff, N.Y./Briarcliff Manor) went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Freshman Conor Ressel (Rockport, Mass./Gloucester) was 1-for-3 with an RBI, while senior Angelo Bruno (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) batted 1-for-4 with a double and run scored.


Sophomore James DeAlto was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.

Junior lefthander Matt Olsen (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) suffered the loss, allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits with two strikeouts and two walks over four innings.

Stonehill opened the scoring with two runs in the second. Bruno led off with a double and later scored on a Ressel groundout. Travers followed with an RBI single to score DeAlto who reached with a walk.

Rollins answered with a five-run third to take the lead for good. The Tars loaded the bases with one out before Brunetti drove one in with a single through the left side. Mager followed with a bases-clearing double to left, advancing to third and scoring on an error on the play. Rollins added an unearned run in the fourth before taking an 11-2 lead with a five-run sixth. Sophomore Greg Smith (Stamford, Conn./Westhill) and Adams drilled RBI doubles, the latter a two-run hit, and freshman Zach Persky (Solon, Ohio/University School) followed with a two-run single.

Stonehill drew within 11-4 with another pair in the sixth as four-straight Skyhawks singled, capped by an RBI hit by Travers. Junior Kyle Shepard (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet), who singled, scored when sophomore Michael Zeiner (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) hit into a double-play. However, Rollins broke the game wide open with ten runs in the eighth.

Stonehill (7-4, 0-0 NE-10) looks to bounce back tomorrow when it faces the University of Bridgeport here at Rollins at 11 a.m. The Skyhawks first home game is scheduled for Friday, March 25, when they host Post University for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Rollins (16-7, 1-2 SSC) hosts Columbia University on Thursday at 6 p.m.
