Stonehill Tops Bentley, 6-2

WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 13, 2011) – Stonehill College, ranked fifth in this week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) East Regional poll, ran its winning streak to six games with a 6-2 victory over rival Bentley University at Alfond Stadium on the campus of Rollins College this afternoon.

Senior righthander Bryan Galligan (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and allowed just two hits overall in seven shutout innings to lead Stonehill to the win. He struck out six and walked two in the outing.

Junior Rich McHugh (Pembroke, Mass./Thayer Academy) paced the offense as he hit 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Classmate Steven Popp (Unionville, Conn./Farmington) was also 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and run scored, while sophomore Michael Zeiner (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Senior Scott Hackett (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) chipped in by batting 1-for-3 with an RBI and run scored.

Senior Chris Hardy (Warwick, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) and junior Mark Lane (Tyngsboro, Mass./Tyngsboro) were both 1-for-3 with an RBI. Sophomore Lamarre Rey (Lynn, Mass./Pingree School) chipped in with a 1-for-3 effort.

Sophomore righthander John Yohe (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic) took the loss (1-1) and he yielded four runs, just one earned, on five hits with five strikeouts and no walks in five innings.

Both pitchers breeze through the first three innings, but Stonehill broke through with a three-run fourth. Senior Nick Nardacci (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) led off with a double, scoring when Hackett reached on an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt. McHugh followed later with a one out RBI single before Popp delivered an RBI double to right center.

Stonehill added a single run in the fifth on an RBI single through the left side by Hackett. The Skyhawks ran their lead to 6-0 with a two-run sixth on Zeiner's RBI double.

Bentley got two runs back in its final two at bats when freshman Sean Keady (Norwood, Mass./Norwood) reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and  then scored on a Falcons error. Bentley added its final run in the ninth. Senior Ross Curley (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) drew a leadoff walk in the ninth and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Lane.

Stonehill (7-2, 0-0 NE-10) and Bentley (3-6, 0-0 NE-10) will square off again here at Rollins College again on Monday at 4 p.m. The Skyhawks first home game is scheduled for Friday, March 25, when they host Post University for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
